How to Look After Your Trainers
Whether you are wearing trainers that cost £5 or £500 you will probably want to keep them looking pristine and as good as they can for as long as possible. Here are some top tips to help you keeping your trainers looking tip top!
Wear the right trainers for the right conditions.
If you are going to be running in your trainers then ensure you invest in a pair that are specially designed. You will reap the benefits in the long run with a pair of trainers that are long lasting and specifically designed for constant movement. Most running shoes will be designed for use on tarmac or pavement so if you are going to be running over fields and hills constantly then consider a pair of purpose built shoes.
If you are looking for some trainers to go with that perfect outfit and just to wander around for the day then make sure you go for a pair that are well fitting to reduce the amount of rubbing that occurs.
Make sure you clean them properly.
If you come home with muddy or damp shoes and tend to leave them then you could be drastically shortening the length of your trainers. Mud and dampness will rot away the rubber on your trainers and eventually it will literally just start to break apart. Spend just a moment or two using a toothbrush to remove any dirt while running the edge under warm water. This will allow most of the dirt and mud to be removed and then your trainers will be able to dry naturally without anything clogging up the rubber. By giving your soles a quick bang together to remove any excess mud from there too you will improve the drying time and stop your trainers become heavy. Washing your trainers in the washing machine is a no no and while they may look fine the first or second time they will soon become damaged.
Should you have shoes that are completely saturated throughout then be sure to remove the in-soles before leaving the shoe & sole to dry separately. Stuffing the trainers with newspaper can also help to remove some more moisture but do not leave the newspaper in for more than a couple of hours. You can run some kitchen towel or tissue along the laces to squeeze out any excess water from them too. Always leave your shoes to dry naturally and never attempt to use a tumble drier, radiator, hair dryer or anything else to speed up the drying time.
Store your shoes correctly.
Be sure to store your trainers somewhere that is dry and not too warm. If you allow your shoes to get too warm then this can prevent them drying correctly and can lead to odorous trainers. Do not store in a box either as this will prevent the shoes being aired properly.
Overall just be sure to keep your trainers clean, dry and well looked after. A few minutes cleaning can prolong their life hugely.
