How to Make Your Own Puppy Crate

Crates are great for keeping puppies or dogs inside during the night or when you are out of the house for a few hours. These are very helpful in making sure that they are safe while you are gone. Other dog owners use these for potty training which is very important especially when they are living inside the house. Aside from these, you can also use a dog crate when you are traveling with your dogs in order to keep them away from accidents and stress-free.

Crates are sold on pet stores which come in a variety of sizes and designs. Although they are not too expensive, making one yourself will cut down the expenses which can be used for other important stuffs. When it comes to building your own puppy crate, make sure that the size is large enough for the animal to sit, lie down, and stand on its four feet. Take the exact measurement of your puppy and adjust 5 to 6 inches in order to provide extra space.

-Tools and Materials – you will be using wood boards, hinges, slide locks, drill, paint brush, paint, and sandpaper. You can always get your boards cut at the store for the exact dimensions that you want to use for your crate.

-Cut Holes – keep in mind that the puppy should be comfortable inside the crate. For this reason, you would need to cut holes on the two sides of the crate so that your pet can take a look outside and breathe without any difficulty. Cut holes on the front door as well.

-Assemble – put four hinges on each of the outer area of the three walls aside from the front door. Make sure that they are properly attached and secured in order for the crate to hold the puppy inside. Place the top and base of the crate and screw the hinges in order to secure and assemble the whole crate except for the door. Install two hinges on the side of the front door as well as the sliding lock on the other end which will automatically lock as soon as the puppy is placed inside.

-Sand – as soon as you are done with the carpentry and assembly work, the next thing you need to do is to smoothen out the edges of the crate. This is important in order to prevent your puppy from pawing or gnawing at the edges which can splinter in the long run. It is also essential as a preparation process in case you want to paint or stain the crate both from the inside and on the outside.

-Paint – in case you have decided on painting the puppy container, you can start by applying paint primer using the brush. By the time the primer dries up, you can then apply the color of paint material you want to use on the crate. Make sure that you do not coat the structure too much as this will lead to peeling and breaking of paint which can be eaten by a curious puppy.
