How to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

During the winter season, many people fall victims to the fatal death of carbon monoxide poisoning due to the fact that they tend to use products or devices that emits the dangerous gas. Especially during power outages, most of us would resort on using stuffs that would provide heat but in return do compromise our health and safety. Keep in mind that most of the accidents are due to the lack of common sense on the part of the victims. There are ways on how to prevent getting poisoned by carbon monoxide especially when you know the causes of this problem.

Although you may not be able to discern whether there is carbon monoxide, there are ways on how you will be able to detect possible poisoning especially when in an enclosed area. Below are some of the ways on how you can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

-Common Sense – in case you are not feeling well especially when you are inside the car or house, make sure to check the ventilation or go out of the enclosed area as soon as possible. This feeling is a clear sign that the oxygen is being cut off which is why you are having hard time feeding oxygen to the lungs and other essential parts of the internal organs. In case your detector goes down or in a power outage, make sure that you do not use any device that can cause suffocation due to carbon monoxide residues.

-Carbon Monoxide Detector – as much as possible, purchase and install one of these essential tools if you do not want to suffer from the fatal consequences of gas poisoning. Make sure though that it is working properly and does not consistently turns off especially when needed. An alarm set inside the house or a portable one allows you to determine a dangerous situation when you detect one with the device.

-Avoid Using Grills Inside the House – although cooking inside the house during the winter using your grill is more convenient than done in the outside, there is a huge possibility that you will get carbon monoxide poisoning. Charcoal emits this odorless and colorless type of gas that will not be detected with our senses. In return, it travels into our body when inhaled which will cause sleepiness which will gradually weaken our body making us more susceptible to getting suffocated.

-Avoid Staying Inside Close Areas – if your house has poor ventilation, make sure that you do not close the windows totally to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition, make sure that you fix the ventilation system in order to have a good rotation of fresh air inside the house.

-Proper Ventilation – as mentioned above, make sure that your house is properly ventilated in order to avoid this problem. A good ventilation system prevents the entrapment of carbon monoxide which in return does compromise your health and safety. One thing to make sure that your ventilation is working properly is by smoking near the ventilation ducts, if the smoke instantly fades away, then you are sure that the system is in good condition.
