How to Refill a Printer Ink Cartridge
One of the major downfalls of owning an ink-jet printer is the fact that it costs so much to buy a new cartridge every time you run out of ink. And, if you are anything like the average consumer, that happens far more often than you would like. Despite the expensive ink cartridges, the printers themselves are relatively inexpensive so they are the printer of choice for many. Did you know that you can refill an ink cartridge all by yourself? It may sound like a complicated process but it is relatively easy.
First of all, you need to choose your ink refill kit. You can buy the ink refill kit at any store that carries office supplies or online at a variety of locations. You will find there are now many stores online that carry office supplies. The packaging will list on it the type of cartridges it can be used for. Each kit is going to include ink as well as a syringe to fill your cartridge with. You are going to want to be prepared for a mess just in case things don\’t go smoothly. It would be wise to lay down several sheets of newspaper over the surface you are using. You could also do this over a sink, although a flat surface is preferable. Disposable gloves would also come in handy at this point. Not all cartridges are the same so you will need to read the instructions that came with your bottle of ink to see how to refill your particular brand of cartridge.
First fill the syringe from the bottle of black ink. Then, locate the small fill hole at the top of your cartridge. You should be able to do so by rubbing your thumb along the top of the cartridge. It is also a good idea to wipe the top of the cartridge with a tissue before you begin. Some instructions also tell you where to locate the holes on your particular cartridge. Once you find the hole for the black ink you can slowly stick the end of the needle into the hole and slowly start to fill it with ink. You will need to know (from the instructions) how much ink your particular cartridge can hold. Once your cartridge is full, wipe the top with a tissue and place it back into your printer as soon as possible. If you are also filling a coloured cartridge you will find that there are 3 colours of ink: magenta, cyan, and yellow. Fill your syringes accordingly. You can either identify each colour hole by sticking a toothpick in each hole or find a guide on the instructions that came with the ink kit. Most kits carry instructions for a number of different brands of cartridge. Follow the same instructions as you did with the black ink, being sure to take your time and push the ink in slowly so as not to make a mess. When you are finished, put the cartridge back into your printer right away and you should be able to print a test page.
