It Is Critical To Be Prepared So That A Disaster Recovery Service Is Unnecessary
On September 11th, 2001 a great many things changed all over the world, but especially in the United States. Until that day, the closest attack on America had been in Hawaii, some 2,500 miles from the continent. With terror now a real threat here on the mainland, every company needs to be prepared, and a disaster recovery service can help before and after.
The US has always taken a rather casual approach to security for its infrastructure. Railroads which crisscross the nation can be approached from almost anywhere by anyone and trains are left idle and unlocked. The power grid in particular is at best enclosed with a fence, which is more a delaying asset than any form of defense.
There is a method to the process of making preparations and taking precautions against terrorism which can be run by public and private entities. These efforts to increase security, just as with safety programs, will meet resistance because there will be some expense. Maintaining the defense of critical infrastructure and processes are worth it.
In the aftermath of the attack in New York the president issued a Homeland security directive requiring the various functions of the nation began a program of identifying critical infrastructure pieces. The directive recognizes there simply is not enough funding to protect everything immediately. Protection for some things is more expensive than is practical, and the risk of their being attacked is worth accepting is those cases.
The process begins with the identification of all the major processes and equipment of the organization or in the case of a household the recurring events. Once all of them have been listed from most to least important, which is not to imply any of them are not important they must be prioritized. The next part is to identify everything that supports these critical processes or equipment.
The supporting structures and equipment are assessed to see if their destruction would have the same effect as losing what it supports. The analysis of both should include how devastating the loss would how expensive it would be to replace and how long that would take. From there a comprehensive prioritization should reveal from first to last what must be protected and what the funding requirement is for the total and incrementally.
As with any systematic approach to defense it is unlikely to be done quickly because the expense is too great. Having the information about how much money is required and what should be invested in first allows for budget projection and steady work on resolution. Once a plan is in place things that can be fixed should acted on, and for the rest whatever intermediate steps should be taken to minimize vulnerabilities.
Efforts to shore up defenses are often met with a common joke that there is not a terrorist behind every tree, the response to which is to ask the person to then identify which tree. After some cataclysmic event has already occurred, a disaster recovery service can help restore function and process. The effort will be much easier if adequate preparation was taking in advance.
