Let\’s Talk About Energy Deregulation and What You Can Get From It
First off, let\’s define what it is. In the past, there was only one company (the utility) that serviced you and billed you for using electricity each month. Because of deregulation, it opened up competition for dozens, if not hundreds, of retailers. This in turn forced these retailers to vie for your business, forcing competitive prices in the process.
Wouldn\’t it be nice to have several options instead of being obligated to buy from one place? This is a question that people who oppose energy deregulation should think about. Yes, prices are going up, but that doesn\’t mean they will never go back down. The whole idea of deregulating electricity is for the consumers to be empowered enough to make their own decisions and choices about choosing their preferred energy service provider.
One of the major benefits to having energy deregulation in place is paying less than usual for electricity. When retailers are competing for your business, they usually pull out all the stops to do so. They offer promotions and discounts, give away gift cards and/or give out incentives. The best part? If one retailer lowers their prices, everybody follows suit.
As a paying customer, you are entitled to get the best customer service around. Retailers will of course make sure that you get nothing but. They know that bad customer service means sayonara to their business.
What concerns some is the tedious work they think they have to do when switching companies. Some think that they have to wait for the new retailer\’s technician to come by and manually switch on/off their power. No. Switching happens between your old and new retailers\’ internal systems; you don\’t have to do anything.
If you are concerned about preserving the environment and are worried that your energy source might be harmful to it, fear not. Retailers are required by law to tell their customers the source of their utility\’s energy so that you can be a conscious and informed decision as to whether or not to pay for their service or shop elsewhere.
This has become one of the major issues when choosing an energy service provider nowadays because people are forcing these companies to be more environmentally-conscious. You can stand up for what you believe in just by getting to choose which company to give your business to. The retailers also know this so some are also making their own switching to more green and eco-friendly energy sources.
One thing to keep in mind though, not everybody is for energy deregulation. As a consumer, you have to do your homework. Aside from the benefits presented to you above, do some more research and interview people who have both liked and disliked this change. There are hundreds of websites, articles, and news about this topic, and social media is at the forefront. Don\’t be afraid to read up and get educated, it\’s a big plus, especially if you are hesitant about getting new service from a company you know little to nothing about.
