Coil binding has quickly become the go-to binding format. It is now even more popular than past champions such as comb and wire. It is popular for many reasons and can be used to bind cookbooks, manuals, booklets, reports, presentations and more. One solid coil binding machine you may want to consider using is the Akiles CoilMac-M. I have used this machine on several occasions and would like to share my impressions with you.

Akiles is one of the biggest manufactures of book binding machines in the United States. They are well known for their huge line of WireMac, CoilMac, MegaBind and EcoBind book binding machines. Their lineup covers the range of comb, coil and wire. This includes manual and electric machines. They are best known for the quality of their machines. They feel like hunks of lead, mostly because they are made out of tough metal construction.

The Akiles CoilMac-M coil binding machine has been around for years. It features durable metal construction and five individual disengageable punching pins. This makes the CoilMac-M a good machine for custom book binding. It is capable of handling paper from a few inches long up to 13\” wide. This versatility makes the CoilMac-M popular for binding books, reports, cookbooks and other literature.

This coil binding machine utilizes a 4:1 pitch hole punching pattern. This means it punches four holes per inch, which is about 44 holes along the 11\” side of a sheet of paper. The CoilMac-M has a total of 53 punching pins. It has an open throat, which means it can be used to punch even longer sheets of paper.

. The punching dies can handle up to 20 sheets of 20# bond paper at a time or up to 2.6mm of hardboard. This coil binder can also be used to punch through card stock, clear covers, poly covers and more. This means you can bind some books that look very professional and extremely creative. The end results look great. The long handle makes paper punching extremely easy. Pages turn easily, pages lay flat and pages can be wrapped completely around.

As paper is punched, the punched holes drop down into a waste drawer. Non-skid feet keep the machine positioned during the entire binding process. Weighing in at 35 pounds, this solid machine fits and can be used on most desks and tables. It features a brushed metal finish with wood and gray accents. It looks excellent next to other office equipment.

The only downside to this binding machine is the lack of an electric coil inserter. Coils have to be manually spun in. While this doesn\’t take a long time, an electric coil inserter is about 4-5 times faster. You can, however, use this to bind several dozen books a day without any issues.

In conclusion, I have to say that this is a solid entry-level coil binding machine.
