Psoriasis Diet – 5 Nutrients to Consider in Treating Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a condition which is characterized by having dry, red plaques of thickened skin as a result from over production of skin cells. It is usually caused by an immune system malfunction which in turn causes the overproduction of skin cells. This thick and scaly skin usually appears on the person’s elbow, scalp or knees.

According to the experts, there is still no known cure for psoriasis and it is considered to be a chronic skin condition. Psoriasis treatment is not focused on treating the disease but instead, it is more focused primarily on treating the symptoms. Although Psoriasis Diet is not yet completely reliable, studies show that our bodies need certain nutrients in order to manage the condition.

Though steroidal cream is reduced is thought that it will not contribute in the worsening of psoriasis. Omega-3 fatty acids contribution is believed to help in the management of psoriasis because of its ability to become and anti-inflammatory substance once absorbed by the body. Foods to consider are oily fishes like mackerel, sardines and salmon. Seeds such as sesame seeds, flax seeds and sunflower seeds.

3. Zinc – it is thought that patients with psoriasis have a high zinc deficiency. Examples of food that contain zinc are whole grain foods and shellfish.

4. Folate – it is said to help the health of the skin and have a healthy skin division. Lentils, peas, wheat, fortified breakfast cereals, cabbage, broccoli, orange juice and brussel sprouts are examples of food that has folate.

5. Beta Carotene – the contribution of beta carotene in managing psoriasis is that it helps in the Vitamin A conversion, which is beneficial to body in order to have a healthy skin.

Though having a strict Psoriasis Diet plan is not an assurance, drinking lots of fluids helps in the hydration of skin, making it less prone to irritation. One important thing to consider during Psoriasis Treatment is the avoidance of foods that is believed to trigger it.

The foods that are considered to trigger psoriasis are red meat, foods that contain monosodium glutamate (or MSG), oily foods, Soda, Acidic foods, red wine, tomatoes, berries and “junk” foods. Avoiding these kinds of foods and having a healthy diet also helps in boosting your immune system.

Aside from eating the right foods and having a healthy diet, hygiene is also important. Though it cannot treat the disease, it helps in alleviating the symptoms. Keeping the affected area clean, helps the skin to be less irritated.
