Qualities of a Good Nanny
Hiring a nanny is an extremely important task, but it can also be a nerve-wracking task. The nanny is the person you are entrusting to look after your children and possibly run your household. Weeding through various applications and conducting multiple interviews to find just the right candidate can be more than a little draining. It’s important to match the right nanny to your specific family, and since no one nanny is perfect for every situation, it can get quite involved. However, there are a handful of qualities you’ll want all nannies to possess, because they will result in better care for your children.
One quality that is important for nanny jobs is emotional maturity. Some nannies are still rather young themselves, but they are consistently thrust into adult situations as part of the job. Being emotionally mature means the nanny has the ability to remain calm and keep a level head no matter what is going on around her. You’ll also want nannies to have a strong understanding of child development. Being able to handle children’s mood swings, actions and reactions is definitely important as far as nanny jobs go. In an interview, ask potential nannies how they might handle different scenarios and ask their references how they dealt with the different stresses of the job. You’ll also want nannies who are interested in continuing their professional development after they sign on with you.
Some of the basic qualities that you don’t want to overlook include punctuality, dependability, intelligence and a genuine interest in your children. Considering the nature of nanny jobs, you don’t want to hire someone on who is primarily concerned with getting a pay cheque. Of course, discussing money during a job interview is completely normal, but you have to get the sense that she is interested in the kids first, or there really is no point. You have to at least feel as though your nanny is dedicated to your children almost as much as you are. The punctuality quality may not be quite so important if you are hiring a live in nanny, because she will always be around and you won’t have to be waiting on her everyday before you leave.
Since the children that the nanny will be watching are still yours, you need a nanny who is going to respect your positions on parenting and other issues. Sometimes, especially if nannies have their own children, they may come into it with their own ways and beliefs that are hard to shake. It’s important to be on the same page before nanny jobs start, just so there are fewer problems later.
Perhaps the main thing you want to see in a nanny is comfort around your kids and trustworthiness. You want her to be right in there to handle the kids and spend time with them, and you want her to welcome any drop ins or unscheduled visits by you. A professional, confident nanny doesn’t care who is watching or who might be around when she’s doing her thing.
