Recycling Toner Cartridges

Recycling your ink cartridges and toner cartridges isn\’t just good for the environment; it\’s good for your wallet too. By refilling your used cartridges or purchasing recycled cartridges, you\’ll cut down on a significant amount of waste in your home or office and you\’ll save money for other important purchases. When you choose to recycle your cartridges, you even keep them from being shipped to poorer countries, where they can cause health issues for the workers who sort them, often without any protective equipment.

In the past, recycled cartridges often leaked ink. This was because they were drilled open in order to refill the cartridge. This resulted in recycled cartridges being seen as inferior to brand-new cartridges, which meant that millions of cartridges made with reusable resources were tossed into landfills. Today, they are refilled by taking the cartridge apart and refilling it as it were new, then resealing it, which ensures that no leakage will occur. If you choose to refill the cartridge yourself, you\’ll use a refill kit that is often provided by the manufacturer or can be purchased from an office supply store or online shop, saving you even more money than if you chose to take it to a professional to be refilled.

Nearly all of the materials that it takes to make a cartridge can be recycled. They are usually made of plastic and metal, and sometimes rubber or foam is used to make them. All of these can be recycled, but if you\’re unsure you can contact your local environmental authority. Some businesses or office supply stores even offer special bins for recycling cartridges on their premises.

The production process of cartridges uses a lot of valuable resources such as plastic, metal, and oil, which means that the cost of production is passed on to the buyer. If you run your own business or work from home, your printing costs will take up a large portion of your budget, so you can\’t afford to be wasteful. The good news is that that being economical is also good for the environment!

Certain types of cartridges also can be refilled with new ink or toner, saving you money as well as reducing the amount of trash produced by regularly purchasing new cartridges and throwing the older ones away. You can purchase ink and toner in bulk, saving you money in the long run. When your cartridge is no longer usable, it can be recycled from its component parts. If you recycle regular household goods such as paper, plastic, and thin card, then why not go a step further and save your printer cartridges from the landfill as well?

It takes a gallon of oil to produce a cartridge, and when you simply throw it out without thinking about it, that same cartridge will take over 1,000 years to properly decompose in a landfill. The next time you have to replace your ink cartridges, think twice about putting them in the bin. Give recycling a shot!
