Shin Splints Explained

Shin pain is a tell tale that you are experiencing problems such as injuries or fractures on your shin. Many athletes have experienced this type of injury especially those who use their lower limbs in combat sports. Soccer players are also more likely to have this type of injury due to the forceful impact on the foot when kicking the ball. Average individuals also tend to acquire shin splints throughout their lives due to various factors that could affect the shin area.

The most common factor that can contribute to the acquisition of a shin splint is through the inflammation of the periostium of the tibia. This is the sheath which surrounds the bone. In addition, any abnormal movement of the lower limb can result to this type of problem. Improper footwear can also affect the shin of a person especially when used frequently. You can also expect injury on strenuous training especially when the training routine is changed instantly. Running on hard surfaces can also provide problems to your shin especially when done consistently by the athlete. Overpronation of the foot will also lead to the injury of the shin especially when running uphill.

As soon as you feel lumps and bumps on the inside of the shin, call your doctor and schedule for a visit to diagnose the problem at hand. This will prevent the aggravation of the problem which can worsen when improper medical care is not provided right away. Redness and swelling are evident on the affected area of the shin. Immediately apply cold therapy on the injury to stop the inflammation of the periostium of the tibia. This will also help control the pain on the lower limb(s).

The intake of Ibuprofen or any prescribed anti-inflammatory medication is highly suggested in order for the patient to be able to cope up with the condition. The medication will also aid the patient in relieving pain while under recovery from the injury. Taping the shin will also help provide support for the lower limb which is very important in the prevention of further injuries. Insoles that absorb shock when you step with your foot are great for keeping the condition under control. Make sure that you are also using the appropriate type of footwear to avoid problems with your walking and standing. You can also wear splints which will help reinforce the shin area while you are under the condition of a shin injury.

Stretching exercises along with strengthening programs help prevent the reoccurrence of the injury. Usually, your doctor will give you a routine of rehabilitation program(s) that you can do while under recovery. These are very essential in helping you restore the function and condition of your shin area. However, in case your doctor has not prescribed a program, you can always search for programs that are safe and effective in bringing the shin back in action. You can also try sports massage which is recommended by many medical professionals and athletes due to its efficacy when it comes to aiding the healing and recovery of the shin.
