Signs and Symptoms of a Dislocated Shoulder

Being into sports is quite demanding. In fact, it requires you to dedicate and spend a lot of your time into training and conditioning. These are both important in order to help you improve your speed, power, strength, stamina, and intelligence which are all vital in your respective sport. During the course of training or in the game though, accidents such as a dislocated shoulder are inevitable and are occasionally acquired by even the best among the athletes all over the world.

Acquiring an injury does not mean that it is the end of the athletic road for you. Some athletes learn and grow from a damage dealt to their body and others take it as a challenge. Although being sidelined for a while is not a good thing, getting back on track is a good way of testing your mental and physical will. Restoring back your condition is not very difficult, in fact it is being overcome by many athletes regardless of the degree of damage caused to a specific part of the human body.

Getting back on track is much easier if the problem is not serious. This can be done only if the injury has been detected earlier and proper medical care has been applied to the affected area. If these initial medical solutions and preventions were not achieved, restoring the normal function and condition of the injured part of the body may take a longer period of time. So, how can you tell if you have a dislocated shoulder?

-Pain – a sudden feeling of pain and discomfort can be felt on the injured shoulder especially when you are trying to move it up and away from your body. In most cases, people with this type of injury find it comforting to lay the affected arm at rest on the body as this lessens the pain. Other parts of the arm on the affected shoulder would also find it hard to function properly.

-Swelling – aside from the fact that the shoulder makes up for the visible swelling as the head of the arm has “popped out” of the shoulder socket, swelling is a part of the process due to the injury. This chain effect usually depends on the degree of the injury which in a dislocated shoulder can be quite serious. Cold compress usually takes care of the swelling which also helps in relieving the pain.

-Discoloration and Numbness – this is a more serious case as this clearly involves damages on the nerves and muscle tissues. Whenever the nerve is damaged or entrapped, numbness as well as the feeling of being pierced with pins and needles can be experienced. Discoloration is usually caused by blood clot on the muscle tissues when affected by the dislocation of the shoulder.

-Irregularity – when compared to the normal shoulder, the affected shoulder would look different as it loses the smooth, rounded shape. In addition, the shoulder looks more protruded which is kind of awkward especially on serious cases.
