Six Tips to Book a Caribbean Cruise
The Caribbean cruise represents the dream vacation for many. While images of a tipped cruise liner on recent news telecasts may serve as a deterrent, the reader should note that 1) that occurred in the Mediterranean (completely different continent) and 2) even with that event, cruises represent one of the most statistically safe vacations that can be taken. Back on board? Good! So when booking a Caribbean cruise, here are some tips that should be kept in mind:
1) Shop through a reputable provider. There are literally hundreds of websites on the internet offering great deals on Caribbean cruise packages. Unfortunately, many of them are scams or contain hidden surcharges that will make the actual cost much higher. Shopping the name brand sites, going directly to the cruise lines, or even booking through a travel agent (yes, they still exist) are good ways to make sure that you get the rates you are promised.
2) Shop around. While the previous point implores you to stay with reputable providers, I am not saying that you should go with the first provider you find. Compare and contrast the deals that they are offering to find the best rates. Ask them if they have any special packages or discounts coming up. Many companies offer special rates that are not publicized on the web or in magazines, but only to those who ask.
3) Know what you want. Not all cruises go to the same islands. Determine which Caribbean island destination you would like to visit. Many travelers may not care about the various differences, but it is important to recognize are distinct differences between the various locales. Antigua is different from Jamaica which is different from the Dominican Republic which is different from Trinidad and Tobago, etc., etc., etc.
4) Pick the right time of year. Travelers should know the possible advantages and disadvantages associated with when they take their personal vacations. Prices are going to be better in late summer (July, August, and September) compared to the spring. However, there is a reason for this – it is hurricane season. If you are willing to take the risk, then this is a great way to get a cruiser cheaper than you would otherwise. If you need peace of mind, it would probably be better to pay the premium and go during a better time of year.
5) Look for coupons. They will not be in your local paper among the supermarket coupons, but they do exist. Look online, in trade magazines, and search travel blogs & forums for coupons and promo codes that can cut the listed price. Some of these coupons and promotional codes can even be combined to lead to much greater savings.
6) Sales pitches = savings. Some of the best deals you would ever find are free or severely discounted trips that are offered by companies that require your attendance at a sales pitch (similar to timeshare groups). If you have it in you to sit through a long meeting and withstand pressure sales tactics, then this is a great way to keep money in your pocket.
