Snoring – the Common Causes

Have you had an interrupted sleep because of someone snoring? Makes you wonder why some people snore and some do not. It can be a nuisance since it distracts someone else’s sleep. It is not a contagious condition since it is not caused by a virus or bacteria nor can you stop snoring in a matter of days using pills. In fact, most remedies consist of devices and in extreme cases, surgery. What really is behind the snoring condition? Read on to find out.

Air naturally flows from the nose through the throat and into the lungs during respiration. During sleep, this passageway becomes narrower than when you are awake. The sound of snoring is the result of air passing through this passageway. It is also caused by an irregular uvula – that piece of tissue that hangs from the back of the mouth – since this can also cause a restriction in the air passage.

You may occasionally find yourself snoring at one time or another. When you have colds, for example, the passageway of air becomes blocked because of mucus in the nasal passages. Air has less space to go through and you may even breathe through the mouth. The obstructions in the nasal passages can cause snoring. Snoring caused by colds is only temporary since when the ailment is cured, you also stop from snoring.

Some substances can promote the snoring condition. For instance, cigarettes, alcohol, and some drugs can cause irritation to the air passages hence making them narrower than usual. This constriction of the passageways results in snoring. In fact, it is not unusual to find that most smokers also suffer from snoring. To stop from snoring, the common advice given is to avoid the substance which is likely to cause it. So here we find another reason to give up smoking.

The most common factor behind snoring is something we have less control over: this is our physical condition. Let me illustrate this with an example. Remember that snoring is caused by blocked air passageways. An obese person has more fatty tissues in his body. Some of them may lie in and around the throat region. This is likely to cause a restriction on the passageways resulting in snoring during sleep. Losing weight is the usual remedy to stop from snoring if it is caused by obesity.

An unusually long uvula can also contribute to snoring. Although this condition may not immediately cause snoring, it increases the possibility of doing so. A misaligned jaw may also cause you to snore. This may be caused by something as subtle as tension in the muscles to something as obvious as an injury to the same part mentioned. If it is due to an injury, the necessary steps will have to be taken to correct it and in turn helps you to stop from snoring.

Remember that knowledge of the underlying causes for snoring is a necessity so you can safely judge the best remedy to stop from snoring.
