Southwestern Athletic Conference Men\’s Basketball Wrap-up (Jan. 30)
Mississippi Valley 77, Grambling 59
Mississippi Valley increased their stranglehold on the conference with a 77-59 win over Grambling last Monday night in SWAC basketball play.
Paul Crosby led MVSU with 19 points while Kevin Burwell added 16.
The Delta Devils (10-11, 9-0) also got double-doubles from Cor-J Cox and Terrence Joyner, who each scored 11 points, with Cox adding 10 rebounds and Joyner 10 assists. Amos Sturdivant grabbed 12 rebounds for the Delta Devils.
MVSU built a 35-24 halftime lead, shooting 48.3 percent (14 of 29) in the first half, including 7 of 11 on 3-pointers, to 29.2 percent (7 of 24) for the Tigers (3-16, 3-6). Burwell was 4 of 5 on 3-pointers for the game.
Brandon Dorsett scored 17 points and Quincy Roberts 16 for Grambling State, and Peter Roberson added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Grambling State committed only 12 fouls, limiting the Delta Devils to three free throws, which they made.
Alabama State 66, Texas Southern 59
Alabama State overcame an 18-point second half deficit to upend Texas Southern in overtime 66-59 last Monday night.
Ivory White led the Hornets with 21 points, four of which were scored in the final 10 seconds, sending the game into overtime.
Texas Southern entered halftime leading 32-18 and pushed that lead to 48-30 behind five straight points from Fred Sturdivant. However, Alabama State (8-13, 5-4 Southwest Athletic Conference) used a 22-6 run over the final 9 minutes to cut the deficit to 54-52. White\’s layup with 3 seconds left sent the game into overtime.
Crawford had 11 during the run and White had eight as the Hornets outscored Texas Southern 36-22 in the second half.
Alabama State controlled overtime, making the first three baskets and sinking four free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.
Texas Southern (7-14, 6-3) took seven 3-pointers in overtime, connecting on just one.
Sturdivant led the Tigers with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men\’s Basketball Wrap-up (Jan. 30)
Coppin State 87, Norfolk State 82
Coppin State defeated Norfolk State 87-82 last Monday to give the Spartans their first conference loss of the season.
Michael Harper scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures for the Eagles.
Tony Gallo added 16 points, Akeem Ellis 14 and Logan Wiens 12 for the Eagles (11-11, 6-3), who led by 22 points at halftime. Coppin State was up 66-43 with 9 minutes left after a flurry of Ellis layups, but still let the league-leading Spartans back into it.
Norfolk State pulled within six points after a 23-6 run, fueled by 10 points from Kyle O\’Quinn, but Coppin State did just enough from the charity stripe to win the game. The Eagles sank 13 foul shots in the final 2 minutes.
O\’Quinn finished with 27 points and 18 rebounds, both game highs, to lead the Spartans (16-7, 8-1).
Delaware State 56, North Carolina A&T 41
Delaware State used a second half rally to beat North Carolina A&T 56-41 Monday in MEAC basketball play.
Tahj Tate scored 15 points to lead the Hornets.
The Hornets (7-11, 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) blocked 12 shots, including five from Kendall Gray and four from James Marcellus, as the Aggies shot just 27.5 percent from the field (14 of 51).
North Carolina A&T (10-13, 5-3) was just 2 of 17 from 3-point range (11.8 percent) after taking 59 and making 46 percent from long range in its previous two games.
Delaware State trailed 33-30 with 16:39 remaining and went on a 10-5 run to take the lead for good, 40-38. Tate, who scored 10 points during the spurt, capped it on a layup with 12:56 to go.
Tyshawn Bell added 12 points and Casey Walker 10 for the Hornets, who won their third straight.
The Aggies were led by Adrian Powell with 17 points.
