Jackson State 54, Texas Southern 51

Jackson State defeated Texas Southern 54-51 last Monday night, giving the Tigers their first conference loss of the season.

Jenirro Bush scored 23 points and Christian Williams scored five in the final 22 seconds to lift Jackson State to victory.

Jackson State (4-14, 2-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference), which had lost its past four games, trailed 51-49 before Williams\’ 3-pointer gave the Tigers a one-point lead.

After Patrick Onwenu missed two free throws for Texas Southern (5-12, 4-1), Williams was good on a pair for Jackson State.

Bush\’s 3-pointer with 10:38 remaining had given Jackson State a 43-40 lead, its first in 15 minutes, and it continued to lead until a layup by Texas Southern\’s Daniel King set up Williams\’ heroics.

Kelsey Howard scored 10 points and Williams nine for Jackson State, and Bush had eight rebounds.

DaQuan Joyner scored 13 to pace Texas Southern, which had won its first four conference games by an average of 27 points.

Mississippi Valley St. 77, Southern 56

Mississippi Valley beat Southern 77-56 last Monday night to remain the lone unbeaten team in SWAC basketball play.

Cor-J Cox led MVSU with 23 points from the bench.

Five Delta Devils (6-11, 5-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) scored in double figures as MVSU grabbed sole possession of first place in the conference.

Paul Crosby added 18 points and 14 rebounds, Kevin Burwell had 12 points and Falando Jones and Terrence Joyner chipped in 11 each.

The Delta Devils led 37-30 at halftime and held the Jaguars (8-11, 4-2) to just 9-of-25 shooting (36 percent) in the second half.

MVSU made 44.1 percent of its shots (30 of 68), including 11 of 35 from 3-point range. Cox took 12 of those 3s, making four.

The Delta Devils scored 23 points off 21 turnovers and outrebounded Southern 42-32. Derick Beltran led the Jaguars with 15 points and Quinton Doggett and Mike Celestin added 11 each.

MEAC Men’s Basketball Wrap-up (Jan. 16)

Norfolk State 74, Coppin State 66

Norfolk State defeated Coppin State 74-66 last Monday night to remain in sole possession of first place in MEAC basketball play.

Kyle O’Quinn scored 24 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead the Spartans.

Norfolk State, which shot 50.8 percent (31 of 62) is off to its best start in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play ever, and its seven-game win streak is the best since 1994-95.

The Spartans (14-5, 6-0) led by as many as 22, 61-39, on O\’Quinn\’s jumper with 9:25 left, in winning their seventh straight.

Norfolk State led 34-26 at halftime before going 17 of 29 from the floor (58.6 percent) in the second half. Helping Norfolk State\’s hot shooting was 30 points in the paint and 25 points coming off 15 turnovers.

Pendarvis Williams added a career-high 25 points for Norfolk State.

The Eagles (8-10, 3-2) were led by Logan Wiens with 20 points and Antonio Williams with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Bethune-Cookman 68, Savannah State 62

Bethune-Cookman held off Savannah State 68-62 last Monday night to stay within striking distance of unbeaten Norfolk State.

Ricky Johnson made 10 free throws in the final 1:06 to seal the win for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats (7-12, 4-1) led 57-54 when Johnson went to the line for the first time. The freshman guard\’s only previous points in the game came on a layup early in the first half.

His last four free throws came in the final 9 seconds; both trips to the line coming after Preston Blackmon sank a 3-pointer for the Tigers (8-10, 4-2).

Bethune-Cookman led by as many as eight points, 21-13, in the first half but trailed 29-26 at halftime. The Wildcats went ahead to stay on Anthony Breeze\’s free throws that made it 43-42 with 9:32 left.

Adrien Coleman scored 15 points and Kevin Dukes 13 for Bethune-Cookman.

Rashad Hassan had 18 points and Blackmon 14 for Savannah State.
