Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Wrap-up (Jan. 23)
Mississippi Valley 77, Texas Southern 69 F/OT
Mississippi Valley defeated Texas Southern in overtime 77-69 last Monday night, giving them a two game lead in SWAC basketball play.
Terrence Joyner led the Delta Devils (8-11, 7-0) with 18 points, and Brent Arrington added 17. Paul Crosby had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Omar Strong scored 16 points and Madarious Gibbs scored 14 for the Tigers (6-13, 5-2), who dropped into third place in the SWAC standings, a half-game behind Southern, which beat Alabama State on Monday.
Gibbs\’ driving layup at the regulation buzzer tied the score at 63.
In overtime, Joyner provided the first score with a 3-pointer, and Crosby had a three-point play to give the Delta Devils a 71-65 lead with 2:06 remaining. Joyner added a jumper, and Mississippi Valley State protected the lead at the free-throw line.
William Pugh scored 12 points for the Delta Devils.
Lawrence Johnson-Danner had 13 points and Fred Sturdivant 10 for Texas Southern.
Southern 68, Alabama State 56 Final
Southern used a balanced offensive attack to beat Alabama State 68-56 last Monday night in SWAC basketball action.
Quinton Doggett and Derick Beltran led the Jaguars with 17 points apiece.
Jameel Grace added 16 points for the Jaguars (10-11, 6-2), including a pair of 3-pointers to start an 18-5 run that gave Southern a 30-18 lead with 5:08 remaining in the first half.
Leading 35-27 at halftime, the Jaguars began the second half with a jumper by Cameron Monroe and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. They had a 20-point advantage, 54-34, with 10:28 left after two consecutive baskets by Doggett.
Ivory White scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Hornets (7-12, 4-3), who shot 33.3 percent (18 of 54) to Southern\’s 54.2 percent (26 of 48).
Doggett blocked six shots and grabbed eight rebounds for Southern, and Grace had five assists.
Mid Eastern Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Wrap-up (Jan 23)
North Carolina A&T 93, Coppin State 92 F/OT
North Carolina A&T defeated Coppin State 93-92 last Monday night in MEAC basketball play.
Adrian Powell made a 3-point basket with 39 seconds left in the overtime period which decided the final margin of victory.
Coppin State had three chances to win, but Akeem Ellis missed a 3, Michael Harper a jumper and Antonio Williams a layup in the final 16 seconds.
Nic Simpson, whose layup as regulation expired sent the game into overtime, 81-81, led the Aggies (9-12, 4-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) with 22 points. Marc Hill added 20 and Powell finished with 15.
Tony Gallo made 1 of 2 free throws with 48 seconds left in regulation and a jumper with 7 seconds left to put the Eagles up 81-79. North Carolina A&T then struck first in overtime, before the two teams traded baskets the rest of the way.
Harper scored 30 points and Gallo 22 to lead Coppin State (9-11, 4-3), which snapped a three-game win streak.
Bethune-Cookman 67, Maryland-Eastern Shore 55
Anthony Breeze scored 20 points and Bethune-Cookman exploited first-half turnovers on the way to a 67-55 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on last Monday night. The Wildcats (9-12, 6-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) scored 18 points off 12 turnovers to take a 34-19 halftime lead over the Hawks (4-14, 1-4), who got no points off Bethune-Cookman\’s five first-half turnovers.
After trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half, Maryland-Eastern Shore closed the gap. The Hawks cut their deficit to 46-40 at the 10-minute mark on a layup by Ronald Spencer, who scored 10 of his 12 points after halftime.
Bethune-Cookman regained control with a 13-4 run over the next 4:48, pushing its lead to 59-44 after a steal by Breeze and a 3-pointer by Stanley Elliott.
Ishaq Pitt scored 13 points, and Gregory Womack and Spencer had 12 each for Maryland-Eastern Shore.
