Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball (Jan. 28)
Mississippi Valley 60, Jackson State 54
Mississippi Valley defeated Jackson State 60-54 last Saturday night to remain unbeaten in SWAC basketball play.
Cor-J Cox led the Delta Devils with 15 points while Paul Crosby added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Jackson State (5-15, 3-5 Southwest Athletic Conference) outshot MVSU from the field 37.5 percent (21 of 56) to 35.8 percent (19 of 53) as neither team shot particularly well.
The Delta Devils (9-11, 8-0) outscored Jackson State 36-31 in the second half, holding the Tigers without a field goal over the final 1:27 and using free throws to seal the win.
MVSU outscored Jackson State in the paint 26-22 and 17-14 off turnovers. The Delta Devil\’s bench contributed 27 points while the Tigers\’ bench added just six.
The win moves MVSU to 8-0 in the SWAC for the first time in school history.
Prairie View A&M 64, Alabama A&M 57
Defending SWAC champion Alabama State fell to Prairie View A&M 64-57 last Saturday night in Montgomery, Ala.
The Panthers (9-12, 5-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) trailed 48-43 with 4:03 remaining and scored 15 straight. Louis Munks made both his free throws to put Prairie View up 58-48 with 41 seconds left.
Alabama State (7-13, 4-4) committed five turnovers, leading to six points, and Marcellus Jackson scored eight points during the 3:22 spurt.
The Hornets finished with 16 turnovers in the game, and were outscored 43-37 in the second half.
After shooting 28.6 percent in the first half (8 of 28), Prairie View got 10 points from Munks and made 15 of 36 from the field in the second.
Munks finished with 15 points, Jourdan Demuynck 12 and Jules Montgomery had 12 rebounds for the Panthers. Tramaine Butler led Alabama State with 19 points.
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Wrap-up (Jan. 28)
Norfolk State 76, Morgan State 59
Norfolk State cruised to a 76-59 win over Morgan State last Saturday to stay unbeaten in the MEAC standings.
Kyle O’Quinn scored 18 points to lead the Spartans.
The Spartans (16-6, 8-0) remained unbeaten in the MEAC behind the play of O\’Quinn, who hit 7 of 11 shots from the floor, and Pendarvis Williams, who scored 14 points. Norfolk State led 41-22 at halftime.
The Spartans only sank three 3-pointers in nine attempts but that hardly mattered. Not the way Morgan State (5-13, 3-4) misfired. The Bears hit just two of 15 3-pointers. They shot 23.3 percent in the first half, 7 for 30, and made just 1 of 11 from the 3-point arc. Overall, Morgan State shot 31.1 percent from the field (19 for 61).
Kevin Thompson led Morgan State with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double. Norfolk State was 17 for 24 at the line, 28 for 67 overall.
Savannah State 71, Howard 50
Savannah State defeated Howard 71-50 last Saturday to keep pace with first-place Norfolk State in MEAC basketball play.
Arnold Louis recorded a double-double and Rashad Hassan scored 22 points to lead the Tigers.
Savannah State (11-10, 6-2 MEAC) led 32-29 at halftime but opened the second half with an 18-9 run to take a 50-38 lead. The Tigers pushed that lead to 66-46 with 3:21 left to play and outscored the Bison 39-21 in the second half.
Howard (4-17, 1-7) shot 31.8 percent (7 of 22) in the second half after hitting 44.4 percent (8 of 18) of their shots in the first half.
Savannah State outscored Howard 28-18 in the paint and 12-6 on second-chance points. Mike Phillips scored 11 points for Howard, which has lost eight straight games.
