The Key to a Successful Cold Call
It’s one of the most difficult jobs you can have, but it can also be one of the most rewarding one you learn how to focus on success instead of stew over the failures. We’re talking of course about cold calls. There are proven ways to be a more successful cold caller, and as chance would have it these tips will also help you to enjoy your job that much more:
1. Self-Reflection – You don’t need to psycho-analyze yourself, but you do need to figure out what will make you more comfortable cold calling and how you specifically can learn to better handle the rejection that will inevitably come your way. You are going to be hung up on and cussed out and they’ll even bring your mother into the equation chances are at some point. How are you going to handle it? The problem is everyone is different and the solution comes easier for some than for others. Eventually if you keep trying though you will figure out what you need to do so that the rejection truly does not bother you anymore, at least not to a great extent.
2. Stay professional – Some of the same people who are mad at you for calling them are the same ones who, in 5-20 minutes are going to buy what you are selling. Of course if you get mad back, hang up or get into a shouting match than you are not going to sell them anything. Add to that your boss likely won’t much appreciate you cursing someone out should they be listening in and staying professional no matter the situation is always a good idea.
3. Feel their pain – Some of the reactions you get while cold calling are pretty over the top. No matter how upset they are, try to empathize. Understanding the person you are talking to creates a conciliatory repertoire that is very conducive to more sales. Even though you are the one getting hung up on all day, always take the potential customer’s side, but always drive the conversation toward making that sale.
4. Keep a brisk pace – The more people you call the more potential sales you are going to make. While there are plenty of tips for being successful more often, ultimately it is a numbers game. Eventually you will have almost a sixth sense about figuring out who you actually have on the line and who is just dragging you along because they have trouble saying no; in the meantime treat everyone like they are going to sell and always push your pace. You’ll find that at the end of the day all of that hard work paid off, and the more you push yourself to go fast, the easier and easier it gets until it is almost second nature.
Cold calling can be a very effective sales technique, it is also very difficult and there are a number of pitfalls any company can fall victim to. Consider exactly how much it takes to complete a successful cold call: First you’re frankly bugging someone and inevitably bugging them when they are busy, on the phone, eating, or whatever.
