The Trouble With Vinyl Windows

Vinyl windows have long been punted as a good, cheap alternative to aluminium or wooden frames. Often property owners will replace their wooden window frames because it seems like an easier and cheaper option. The trouble is, that home owners do not usually get all the necessary information when making this kind of decision.

Although more expensive aluminium and wood make far better quality window frames. It\’s true that vinyl is not only cheaper but also more energy efficient. However, it also does not usually last longer then 10 years. Having to replace your frames every 10 years will certainly prove more expensive.

The terms vinyl and PVC are used interchangeably when it comes to window frames. Whatever the material is called, the problems remain the same. PVC frames should not be used in hot and sunny areas. A resolution has in fact been passed in Oakland California to phase out PVC frames for this reason. This is because the material should not be exposed to direct sunlight. This is real problem for a material used on windows.

Firstly aluminium or wooden frames block sound much more effectively then PVC does. So if you live in a noisy area or a busy area, wood or aluminium will better ensure a quiet night\’s rest. In extremely cold areas, the PVC option is also not recommended, as it is not a reliable enough material to seal out the cold air effectively.

This type of PVC is too soft a material for this task. It is not rigid enough and expands and contracts with hot and cold. Further, If there is a large window space, a PVC frame must be reinforced with a internal metal extrusion.

When the material is hot, the PVC material will warp, soften and twist. If exposed to too much sunlight, it will also yellow giving the exterior of your home a very shabby appearance. When it\’s cold the material contracts making it very brittle.

In 1999 General Motors decided to stop using PVC altogether on any of their vehicles anywhere in the world. They announced that the reason for this was not only the leeching of plasticizers with its potential negative health benefits. Also the warping, cracking and fading that is a common occurrence.

The plasticizers mentioned by GM are a oily odorless substance that is commonly mixed with PVC to strengthen it. Plasticizers mix very easily and bond tightly with PVC so there is some dispute about how common the leeching effect really is. However, claims of negative health consequences due to leeching are common and it is a contested debate. Most people prefer to avoid the risk.

However, the PVC that is used to make frames is the unplasticized one. In other words it is not mixed, and is called uPVC for short. This material is used for many purposes in building. As well as frames it may also be used for siding and weatherboarding.

Vinyl windows were a popular alternative, but as they age people are clearly seeing that they are not the best option. Those who still choose this option usually only do so because they have been poorly advised. It is wiser to spend more money initially on wood or aluminium then suffer the effect of a poorer quality material.
