Thinking About Dental Implants?
Life can never be perfect. At different points in your life, you are faced with different kinds of problems. The trick however, is to make sure that you don’t panic and try to solve your problem with courage and determination.
In this article, we are going to focus on those people, who have had or will be having certain teeth problems. We are specifically going to focus on dental implants in this section.
A dental implant is basically a tool or a device made of the material ‘titanium’ and is used to support restorations that look like a tooth, to replace the missing tooth. It has certain advantages and disadvantages, but let us first discuss the features and characteristics of a dental implant.
Almost all dental implants are in the ‘root’ form and hence, they resemble a real tooth. Most importantly, the root goes inside the bone appearing to be a real tooth. Dental implants mostly fuse with the bone. But it is important to note that this is an artificial way of putting a new tooth. Therefore, the feeling while chewing or biting on the implant will obviously be very different.
Let us now discuss the material from which the implant is made. The implant basically contains a titanium screw, which resembles a tooth. Mostly, implants are made from pure titanium, available in about 4 grades. Different grades actually have different amounts of iron and carbon in them. Grade 5 titanium is mostly used material. It has about six percent aluminum and four percent vanadium alloy. This type of titanium is believed to give similar osseointegration levels as do a pure form of titanium. This material has the advantage of giving a better tensile strength and fracture resistance. Whatever the material used, the implants can be modified by plasma spraying, anodizing, etching or sand blasting to increase the area, and make it look more like pure titanium.
To fit in the implant, the bone in your mouth has to be prepared using a precision drill at extremely high speeds. The high-speed is extremely important in order to avoid too much pressure on the bone or to prevent burning. After letting the bone grow to the surface of the implant, a crown may be placed on the implant. Usually placing an implant takes a lot of time, but it really depends on the experience and expertise of the doctor and the situation of an individual (some individuals might have a good quality bone, making it easier, but difficult at the same time to place an implant). Hence, there is no fixed time for placing an implant and it varies for each individual.
Dental implants can replace one or more teeth without affecting the neighboring teeth, and they can provide support for a denture, making it more secure and comfortable.
Dental implants have become more popular than the removable bridges because of a number of reasons.
– They are tighter and stable.
– Provide a more natural real feeling (an implant would resemble a real tooth).
– They prevent bone loss and gum recession.
– They look better and make a person feel much better.
– Implants may last for a life time.
– They keep the bordering tooth secure.
– With implants, one would feel very confident and comfortable.
Looking on the darker side, implants do have some disadvantages. First of all, not everyone can afford dental implants. They are too expensive and also carry some risk. Secondly, if a person has too many implants to be placed, it will take a lot of time and effort. Thirdly, it is too difficult to find specialists, who are able to face implants with extreme care and expertise.
There is no doubt that dental implants are artificial teeth that would make a person feel more confident and comfortable. But, one has to realize that they have to look at both the pros and cons of anything, before actually getting them.
