One of your goals as a teacher is to make your students listen to you. You need to know of ways by which you can get the attention of your students.

Teaching your students how to listen will not only make them understand the lessons better but it will also help lessen the work that you have to do. There will be no need for you to repeat the things that you have already said. There are a few ways by which listening skills can be effectively learned.

Create an environment that is conducive to learning and listening. The furniture should be comfortable. Ask help from your school administrator and principal if you have issues with the physical facilities that are currently available in your school.

The place should be silent and free from distracting noises. Lighting needs to be likewise adequate. When you are talking and you want your students to listen to you, you have to stand in front of the room where all your students can see you. It can be easier for any person to listen when he or she can see the source of the voice.

Teachers will have varied experiences with young kids and old kids. The younger ones can test your patience. But so can the older students. However, for older students, a couple of disciplinary measures might help them realize that you are serious with making them remain attentive to your discussions.

Instruct them to listen and pay attention. You might need to remind them from time to time. Make sure that you are consistent with what you are doing. You have to discipline them if there is a need to do so.

Setting ground rules before the start of the school year or of every class can be helpful. These ground rules will inform your students of what you are expecting from them. There can be some who will follow what you want to happen. However, there will still be some of them who will go against the points that you have set. You need to be patient enough to handle these situations over and over again.

Putting these classroom rules on the walls can be a good idea. Paste them on prominent places where your students can constantly see and read. These posts can remind them that they need to conduct themselves according to a few guidelines.

Keep your school rules simple. Don’t be lenient. But, you also shouldn’t be too strict. Small kids might follow their teacher’s instructions. The situation may be different when you are working with tweens and teens. Some of them might rebel and go against what you want them to do. Make sure that you know how to handle these types of children. You should act according to your position. Never lose your cool and remember that you are supposed to be there to help these kids.

Lastly, listen to your students. Know what they want so that you can create a positive learning environment. This will also help you take their opinions into account every time you make changes in the classroom.
