Tips to Make Your Life Easier When Photographing Children
Photographing children is much different than photographing adults or infants. You can never tell what will show up; a polite cooperative child or a mean spirited dis-obedient spawn of something unholy. However, with proper advance planning, it is possible to ensure that it will be the pleasant child that shows up for the setting. Here are five things that can be done to make your life easier.
The time of day has a great deal to do with how the child will act. If you try to do a sitting right before lunch or when they usually take a nap, you’re inviting disaster. It is wise to schedule sitting times when kids are rested and have full tummies. One of the best times is right after a nap and a snack. Bringing snack crackers and cheese is always a good idea. The combination of protein and carbohydrates has a satisfying and calming effect.
Be sure to schedule plenty of time for the photo sitting. If you’re in a big hurry or feel rushed it will rub off on the kids and they will spazz out. Never be rushed to get to the appointment or leave the sitting. Advance planning and loose scheduling will help you have all the time you need. Depending on how far you must travel and the volume of traffic at that time of day you’ll want to adjust your timing. When planning your time keep in mind your child’s attention span. Don’t schedule an hours sitting when they can’t sit still for 30 minutes. Creating a fun environment for this sitting is a great way to have the children engaged and involved in the sitting. If there having a good time they won’t even notice their sitting for pictures. One of the best ways to do this is to learn to juggle 3 balls. There something inherently fun about watching someone juggle.
Dressing the children in comfortable clothes helps keep the sitting relaxed and fun. If the sitting requires stuffy formal clothes it may be best to have the kids get dressed at the sitting. If this is necessary make sure the environment is as fun as possible. Try to get done as quickly as possible so they can change back into their comfortable clothes. If the kid’s attention span or comfort level won’t last the required time, then consider taking a break and letting them unbutton for a few minutes.
If it is possible consider having the setting done at some place that is familiar to the kids. Outdoor sitting are almost always fun and relaxing. If the kids are familiar with their surroundings they will be more relaxed and the photos will be easier and more genuine. If the photo must be formal try to use a formal venue that the kids are familiar with, maybe a church or a library or even a museum. Using these five suggestions will go a long ways to make children feel relaxed and comfortable. When kids are happy and relaxed you’ll get better photos and will take less aspirin.
