Tummy Time – 7 Tips For Taking Great Maternity Shots
The current popular trend of expectant mothers taking photos of their tummies is gaining in popularity. It doesn’t seem like this would be very difficult to shoot but you may be surprised. Here are 7 tips to help you take some great tummy shots.
The first thing you need to determine is your over all goal. You must decide if this is a one time photo or if you are going to chronicle the growth of the baby as shown by the growth of you belly. You also need to decide how conservative or how revealing you want your picture to be. This is a very personal choice and there is no right or wrong answers: only what you’re comfortable with. A good way to decide your comfort level is to ask yourself a couple of questions. First would I mind if my dad saw these and then would I mind if they were posted on the internet. Those questions will help you decide your personal comfort level.
Second, you need to decide if you’re only going to take photos of your tummy or your entire body or just your upper torso. You may consider taking pictures of all three of these. This is especially great if you are photographing your baby’s growth because it will have many angles and it will show the effect on your entire body. Third, you need to decide what kind of clothes you are going to wear. If you are going to take photos of your entire body you will want to have some nice maternity clothes. For upper torso shots you may choose a sports bra or maybe a snow leopard or a jaguar bra, depending on your goal. Some people consider doing a theme: think Prada or Chanel or even baseball or football. If its holiday occurs during your pregnancy you may consider wearing holiday clothes to show how you looked at the time of the year.
Forth, you must decide what kind of makeup you’re going to wear for the portrait. If you normally wear a full face of makeup you should continue to do so for all the pictures. If you don’t wear any makeup you should consider wearing some eye makeup and lipstick. Makeup can really make a difference in how you look on film, ask any model or actress. Whatever type of makeup you wear you should continue though all the photos so there is some consistency.
Fifth, as your tummy grows you may want to consider using ribbons or bows on your belly. Use something pretty. Sixth, when you’re about 6 or 7 months along try oiling up your belly with olive oil for a slick shiny look; maybe even add a little glitter. Seventh, during the last couple of months, try drawing pictures or putting on stickers. Turn your belly into a total piece of art. If you use these tips you\’ll have some interesting shots to record your beautiful tummy for all to see.
