What is a Bruised Heel?
A bruised heel is a damage incurred on the tissues under the heel which is covered with a layer of fat. This type of injury is common among athletes who jump and land with impact on their heel repeatedly throughout the game. It is also an injury among soldiers due to the consistent pounding of the heel during their marches on parades and during practice. Although the affected heel can still be used for walking purposes, a limping action would be very obvious due to the pain and discomfort on the particular area of the lower limb(s).
Unlike other injuries which take months or a year before an athlete can recover, a bruised heel would usually take a shorter time to recover. A few days of rest and treatment is enough to put back a sidelined player back into the game. Regardless of how easy and fast a bruised heel can recover, you should always make sure that you do not stress the affected heel especially while under recovery and healing process. Early detection and action is very important if you are after quick rehabilitation progress. This would take a few days as you can prevent bigger problems if you have caught heel pain at its early stage.
There are a couple of known treatments when it comes to healing a bruised heel. An equal share of contribution by both the patient and the medical expert is very important as it can affect the result of the treatment. Below are the commonly done treatment methods by both the patient and the doctor to heal and restore the condition of a bruised heel.
Patient’s Part:
– Rest and immobilization of the affected heel would be the best thing to do. It would be wise not to batter your heel with walking, especially running and jumping as these two can both aggravate the situation and condition of your heel. Your affected heel can also use some cushion on your shoes or sandals as this can be very good in absorbing shock on your lower limb(s).
Doctor’s Part:
– Advice – the most important thing that the medical professional can contribute to this simple injury is to advice the proper and correct treatment methods for a bruised heel. Although treating this type of problem is quite easy, taking it from the experts would be completely different and very beneficial on your part. Among the advices is the choosing of the right cushion or insoles. There are many different types of heel pads in the market, choosing the ideal one can be a problem to many people especially those who are have issues such as a bruised heel.
– Taping – the doctor can also tape the affected heel to help with relieving the pain and discomfort being felt by the patient. This process also helps in providing protection for the bone at the heel against possible damages or injuries. Although this can be done by the patient himself, letting a professional do the job would give you a peace of mind.
