What is a Fibula Fracture

Any accident such as a direct trauma or impact on the fibula bone can and will result to a fibula fracture of various degrees. Mild fractures often affect the movement of the lower limbs and incorporate pain and discomfort while standing on the damaged leg. Almost all athletes had suffered from such injury especially those who are in contact sports or players who use their feet for this purpose. Soccer players acquire this through the regular impact of the ball on their lower limb.

As soon as you experience sudden pain on your fibula, immediately call for help and avoid using your leg for the meantime. Rest until the medical help arrives and provides first aid and preventive measures to secure your foot while avoiding more problems. Do not try to pull yourself together and go to the hospital on your own in case you are alone. It would be very painful and difficult in your part. In addition, this would aggravate the condition of the fractured fibula which in the end creates more mess than good.

Although not many of us would know the signs and symptoms of injuries, assessing by knowing the location of the problem will help you catch the injury at its premature stage. Most injuries are detected due to the pain and discomfort in that area of the body. The loss of function, swelling, irregularities, tenderness, and other significant symptoms would enable trained individuals in the field of medical care to diagnose and assess the problem.

There are two types of fibula fracture that can affect the mobility of an athlete. One is through trauma injury which is acquired through a direct impact and the other is through stress. A fibula fractured that has been inflicted through traumatic injury usually has instant effects such as pain, inflammation, bruising, and other symptoms of the condition. An injury caught through stress though has a gradual effect on the fibula bone. Both of these are serious and should be treated right away to prevent further damages to the fibula bone and the surrounding parts of the human body.

In a fractured bone, the affected area is usually x-rayed or scanned through an MRI in order to see the actual condition of the bone as well as the damage inflicted. If the damage is only on the bone and is not quite serious, conservative treatment methods are usually recommended by the doctor. However, on cases where nerves, blood vessels, tendons, and other part of the human body are affected, surgery would be the usual solution.

Rest is the number 1 treatment and the most recommended solution to all types of injuries. The advantage of immobilizing the affected part of the body is to let it recover and heal itself. Our body has the ability of triggering its self-healing power in order to hasten the rejuvenation process. Human intervention such as stretching and strengthening exercises are also vital to the success and rehabilitation of the patient. Always consult your doctor with everything you plan on doing for the benefit of your recovery.
