What is a Quadriceps Strain?
Any pain felt at the front of the thigh can be a possible injury on the quadriceps muscles which can either be due to tearing or contusion. A quadriceps strain is a common type of injury that results when one of the muscle tissues is ripped regardless of its degree. It is a painful condition that can greatly affect the walking of an athlete or regular person struck with this type of damage to the lower limb(s). Although some cases are only mild discomfort on the thigh, others can put the athlete at the bench for a long period of time.
Quadriceps strain is usually caused by the overstressing of the quadriceps muscle tissues which are constantly used under pressure for a long period of time. In most cases, athletes who are usually on the run in high velocity have the higher tendency of acquiring the injury. Soccer teams are among the common group of players who have a high number of casualties when it comes to quadriceps strain.
The symptoms of this injury may slightly vary depending on the degree or grade of the condition of the damaged muscle tissue(s). Lower grade allows the athlete to walk, however in an uncomfortable condition which includes limping or carrying the affected foot. Quadriceps strains are graded from 1 to 3 based on the damage or tear on the muscle tissues.
– Grade 1 – as mentioned above, the athlete can still use his lower limb(s) to walk but in an uncomfortable condition. May or may not have an inflammation afterwards. You can feel slight tightness on the muscle tissues on your thigh. You will also find it difficult to straighten your affected lower limb(s) especially against resistance in case you try to test the condition of your foot.
– Grade 2 – your walking will be affected with pain. Running can be quite difficult and it is impossible to continue your training program. Pain can worsen when you try to bend or straighten your lower limb(s). You will notice swelling and bruising on the affected foot.
– Grade 3 – severe pain is present especially when you try to walk on the damaged foot. The use of crutches is highly advised in grade 3 as your walking will be greatly affected. You will be unable to perform for a few months as you can’t tolerate the pain in case you try to play with this type of tear.
Try to rest the affected thigh for 8 to 12 weeks or as suggested by your doctor. This will give enough time for the tear to recover and heal in time. As soon as the pain no longer affects the movement of the lower limbs, try on working on the rehabilitation program. The program is usually composed of stretching and strengthening exercises that are designed to help you regain the usual strength, condition, elasticity, mobility, and flexibility of the injured part of the body. Surgery will be suggested by your doctor in case a complete tear has been diagnosed on one of your quadriceps muscles.
