What is Concussion
Any forceful impact to the skull can cause damages to the skin, brain, and other important parts of the head. In some cases, a person who has been it or has hit his head on an object would lose consciousness for a while. Although this is not true in all cases as minor concussion would only bruise and leave mild damages to the head. It is a very risky and dangerous type of injury as severe cases can leave a person paralyzed or dead on the spot.
In sports, concussion is common in boxing and other contact sports where fists, knees, elbows, and the lower limbs hit hard on the head. Especially if the player is aiming for a knockout, the head is usually the target of the blows. In case it is hit with a strong punch, most of the time the receiver of the damage usually loses balance or consciousness depending on the force of the blow.
Unlike the other injuries, a concussion would immediately require the athlete out from the game as the injury would leave a person disoriented if not unconscious. A mild impact on the head would also be treated with seriousness as it is very dangerous to acquire any damage on the delicate part of our body. As soon as the head is struck with an object or to any hard stuff, contact a medical expert right away. Early care and treatment is very important as it can save the life of the patient.
While under recovery, the athlete should be kept under observation at all times and should never be left alone. A doctor should always be on call and nearby to ensure the safety of the client. Regular scanning of the head should always be done in order to check the condition as well as the progress.
The patient should give priority in resting for a while. This would help his body to recover from the injury. Do not try in any way to get back into training as this would lead to more problems in the long run. Keep in mind that the head holds the brain which is a very important part of the human body. Any damages dealt to the brain would result to the loss of control over all the parts of the human body. Medical evaluation should be done regularly in order to keep the client updated on his or her condition. Do not try any massage therapy to the head as this would only create more harm than good. Whatever you are planning on doing, make sure that your doctor has approved it, and otherwise leave it out of the scene.
Players who had concussion should take a leave from the game for a while until he or she has fully recovered from the accident. In most cases, this would take several months depending on the degree of the damage dealt to the head. Repeated concussion should require the athlete to retire from the game as this will be very dangerous and may lead to his death.
