What is Hallux Rigidus

Hallux rigidus is the medical term used for an injured big toe. Basically, this particular toe becomes stiff at the onset of the injury which greatly affects walking and running. The hallux or big toe plays an important role when it comes to movement as it bends backwards as the foot push for motion. In this type of injury, a person would find it quite uncomfortable and difficult to move properly due to the fact that the toe does not bend on its purpose.

There are lots of factors which affects the big toe in becoming rigid or stiff. It can either be through an impact or due to overstressing the foot. In athletes, it can be a common problem especially for those who are competing on sports activities that constantly require the player to run around the field or court for a long period of time. Overpronation of the foot does contribute a lot in causing damages to a specific area of the lower limbs. Traumatic injury such as hitting the big toe with an object can damage the cartilage which will result to such problem. In many cases though, it is basically caused by consistent weight bearing of the toes in such an inappropriate position. Regardless of the cause, the most important thing to keep in mind is the prevention of further injuries. Walking without the hallux functioning properly can contribute to other joint problems such as on the pelvis, ankle, and knee of the patient.

Detecting the problem is quite easy as compared to the other types of injuries of the human body. At the first sign of pain and stiffness on the MTP joint, any average individual can tell that the problem is a hallux rigidus. Pain is present at the bottom of the big toe especially when you try to walk and bend the toe. You will also notice swelling on your toe depending on the condition and the degree of the injury. As the condition worsens, mobility will be greatly affected as well as standing properly for a long period of time. Limping will be obvious as you will find it very difficult to walk straight and properly with a toe that is not functional.

A person who is affected with such injury should get his big toe x-rayed in order for the doctor to accurately diagnose the condition of the toe. This is also essential as the medical professionals base their treatment and rehabilitation programs on the situation of the injury. Medications, treatment and rehabilitation programs will be prescribed and follow-up by your doctor from time to time depending on your progress. Make sure to inform your doctor in case you feel pain or discomfort while trying out the stuffs that he or she has recommended. Never attempt to treat your injury by your own especially if you do not have the medical knowledge as well as the experience. Let a professional handle the case as this has a higher chance of success as well as in preventing further damages at the same time.
