What is Impingement Syndrome?
Repetitive pinching of the tendons as they pass through the Subacromial space (the narrow bony space) leaves it inflamed and irritated which often results to an impingement syndrome. The injury is also known as swimmer’s shoulder or thrower’s shoulder. Although this may not be as common as the other injuries, it can happen to any athlete especially those that use shoulder movements a lot during the game. This type of compromise on the shoulder area is quite easy to prevent and treat though especially with expert medical advice and care.
Impingement syndrome is classified into two categories namely internal and external. Both of these will leave pain and discomfort to the affected shoulder. Internal impingement is usually caused by repetitive strains and friction caused by excessive use of the shoulder such as with baseball, Frisbee, and other sports that involves throwing. External on the other hand can be either due to weak physique or congenital abnormalities. Both of these should be treated with respect as they can change the life of a person when less importance and lack of medical attention and action is done.
Impingement syndrome can be detected early on which can actually help in preventing the injury from happening. However, most of us could not tell the injury until it is actually there. Here are the common signs of the injury. Knowing these will help prevent bigger problems in the long run and can really make a difference with the severity of the case.
– Pain – expect a gradual development of pain on your shoulder area as soon as you feel the injury. Pain will significantly increase as you try to move your shoulder in every direction. Relaxing and resting the shoulder will greatly help in relieving the pain temporarily prior to any professional care from your doctor.
– Discomfort – you will notice that there is always a discomfort every time you move your shoulder at the front or side of the shoulder joint. Never attempt to fight off discomfort as it is a good way of telling you that this part of your body is not in good condition. The best thing to do is to go with the flow and let your body rest for the moment to avoid inflicting more harm to the already damaged shoulder.
– Difficulty in Movement – although this should not be tried, moving your arm by lifting it above 90 degrees is very difficult especially on severe cases.
– Difficulty in Rotating Arms – you will also experience difficulty when you try on rotating the arms as when reaching behind the back.
When you feel these symptoms, make sure to consult with your doctor. A medical professional can always assess and diagnose your condition and scan for any possible injuries aside from the impingement syndrome. A shoulder impingement test can also be performed to get the actual condition of the shoulder. This will also help narrow down the problems as it is more accurate than visual, palpation, range of motion, functional, and other types of manual assessment.
