What is Repetitive Strain Injury

Repetitive strain injury or RSI is a general term used for injuries that occurs to the wrists, hands, and forearms of an athlete. Although these are commonly incurred on the upper limbs of the human body, they can also be inflicted on the other parts of the body. These types of injuries are usually caused by repetitive movements where the parts of the limb acquire damages in the long run especially when bearing weight during the process.

Among athletes, the common players who are prone to this type of injury are those who are playing racket sports. Tennis, badminton, as well as baseball are the types of sports that have the higher numbers of RSI all over the world. In non-athlete patients, encoders, musicians, and other occupations that require the use of the wrist are among the commonly injured individuals. There are two types of RSI which are both caused by repetitive movements of the upper limbs. Although there are no tests conducted in order to assess a person having this type of problem, the patient himself can tell base on his condition. Thus allowing the medical professional to conclude based on the situation of the patient as well as the medical history.

When it comes to treating RSI, most of the cases can be resolved using conservative methods, ultrasound, acupuncture, sports massage, and rehabilitation programs. Although every patient’s condition and situation may vary from one another, most of these can be solved using similar programs. Rest would be the core of the healing process as it provides time for the problem to be solved by itself. Avoid putting weight on the affected part of the body as this can either aggravate the condition or make the rehabilitation period much longer.

Excessive swelling may require anti-inflammatory medications in order to control the condition. Some people use corticosteroid injections in order to keep down the inflammation on severe cases. Consult with your doctor first before taking any medications in order to prevent additional damages to your body.
