4 Factors Associated With First Aid Training in the Workplace
If you are the owner of a company the law requires you to provide first aid training to your employees. Though there may not be rules about the level of training to be provided, first aid training for all employees is still very important.
Four main factors are considered in first aid training at the workplace.
– The First-aider: An employee who is trained in first aid is a first-aider. As an employer you are required to display a notice all over the work site informing the employees about the first-aider, his name, and where he can be found. The trained first-aider must be responsible, competent, healthy and prepared to leave his desk should an emergency arise. All first-aiders across the work place should be trained by a recognized organization and should have their course completion certificate in hand. Additional training should be given in your workplace itself so that the specific issues of that location can be kept in mind.
Writing new records and updating old ones is part of the first-aider’s duty. For example, when the paramedics arrive at the scene he should be able to produce a record of any treatment given prior to their arrival.
– The First aid box: The first aid box has to be regularly checked. Items that have crossed their expiry date should be disposed off and replaced. An employee must be given responsibility to do this and maintain a register. The first-aider should have a first aid box within his reach.
The first aid box should include items like bandages, antiseptic, plasters, scissors, disinfectant, and some general medicines. It is advisable to make an inventory sheet and keep a copy in the first aid box.
– The First aid room: In companies where there is higher risk of accidents like in chemical factories, a first aid room is needed. A first aid room should be big enough to accommodate a couch and a sink with running water. It should have clean surfaces and good lighting and ventilation. This room should be accessible by all employees and open at all times. It is preferable to have the room located towards an exit to make it easier to transfer the patient to an ambulance. There should be a list of phone numbers of all the first-aiders. The record book maintained by the first aider must be kept in this room.
– The first aid equipment: In addition to the first aid kid certain equipments need to be stored in the first aid room. Stethoscope, oxygen cylinder, defibrillator, sharps disposable containers, etc. are necessary apparatus in the event of an emergency.
These four factors are in turn influenced by certain other factors. These are- the type of industry, the number of employees, shift pattern, and distance from the closest hospital.
First aid training gives the employees important knowledge about the different accidents that can take place around the workplace and how to deal with them. It bestows them with the confidence to adequately manage emergencies without fear. All employees become safety conscious and therefore accidents are automatically reduced.
