4 Tips to Ensure That Your Area Rug Doesn’t Become a Health Risk
Your room may have the best furniture, ambient lighting and beautifully textured paint on the walls, but many will agree that there is nothing that can transform your room like an exquisite area rug. The sheer variety of colors, textures and fabrics can tempt anyone, and why not.
But did you know these attractive looking rugs can lead to many health problems that can make you sick especially if you have certain allergies? Dust mites, animal dander and other allergens can easily get lodged in the deep texture of such rugs or even underneath them. In fact, some rugs might release volatile compounds in the atmosphere and lead to a host of respiratory ailments.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful area rug in your room. All you have to do is to follow certain measures when purchasing and maintaining it.
Four such important tips are given below:
– Smaller Rug, Smaller Problems: A larger rug will of course gather more allergens. Similarly a deeper or plusher one will be a magnet for such irritants and is also very difficult to clean thoroughly. Thus when purchasing a new area rug, opt for a small to medium one in size, and also ensure that it is thinner or of a low pile variety so that the chances of allergens getting lodged is minimized. You must choose a rug that is made from natural fibers like jute, cotton, hemp, sea grass and sisal.
– Buy a ‘Green’ Rug: Buy green, not a green colored rug but one that has green credentials. Choose an area rug that has a green label of approval. Such rugs have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions unlike those rugs made with synthetic materials. This is especially beneficial if you have large rooms and nothing less than a large carpet will suffice for your particular requirement
– Allow the Rug to Breathe: If you do happen to end up with a rug that is giving off an odor, possibly due to higher VOC, do not worry. Try to provide some ventilation in your room by opening some windows, in most cases the rug will get rid of the odor, albeit gradually. However ensure that when opening the windows direct sun does not fall on the rug as this will lead to fading. Alternatively if the odor is too heavy, you can spread out the carpet in your garage or basement till the odor dissipates.
– Be a Cleanliness Hound: When it comes to a carpet, you must be a cleanliness freak. Immediate removal of any visible foreign bodies and regular cleaning with a vacuum cleaner on both the sides of the rug will reduce the number of allergens and hence the health problems. Occasionally you can also get the rug cleaned by professional cleaners, but ensure they use non-toxic agents that are easily available today.
As you can see a few simple tips will ensure that you can enjoy the luxury of your area rug without having to worry about any health issues.
