5 Workplaces That Require Their Employees to Be First Aid Certified

Getting first aid certification will give you the privilege of saving the lives of your loved ones, colleagues and even strangers. If you learn first aid there is nothing to lose. The training will prepare you for all kinds of situations. It will not only equip you with the necessary skills and techniques, but will also instill in you the confidence to face any difficult emergency situation.

Five workplaces that require employees to be certified are as follows.

– Hospitals:

– If you are a doctor, nurse, laboratory or blood bank technician, your health care organization will need you to have completed a first aid course. Non-medical staff like housekeeping and office staff rarely need the skills but may also be required to do a small course.

– Medical and nursing students should know superior first aid skills including CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). This would also include using the AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

– Medical and Dental Clinics: As in hospitals, all the workers in a doctor’s clinic must also know basic first aid.

– Dentists and Dental Assistants: They are required to have an accredited certification. Dental clinics don’t usually need it. However, complications may arise due to certain procedures that may need basic first aid.

– Office staff: While there are unlikely to perform CPR, they should have knowledge about the fundamentals of first aid. There may be an AED in the clinic and all employees should be able to use it during emergencies.

– Fire stations and Law enforcement agencies:

– Sheriffs, policemen, firefighters and paramedics are also required to have a valid CPR certification. Paramedics must have an advanced certification including CPR. The others can make do with a basic course.

– Schools: Most schools nowadays require the teachers and their assistants to have a certification. In case of an accident in the class or playground, immediate assistance can be provided.

– Others:

– Jail staff: Accidents and emergencies may occur in the prison cells involving the inmates. As it is impossible for medical help to arrive immediately, it is necessary for some of the staff to know first aid and CPR.

– Flight attendants: While flying to their destinations some passengers may have emergencies like breathing issues, wounds, etc. and a certified attendant is needed on board. They must have first aid and CPR certification. AEDs are generally available in flights and airports and flight attendants must know how to use them.

– Lifeguards: It is mandatory for lifeguards at beaches and swimming pools to know CPR. Drowning is common and a skilled lifeguard is needed to save the victim’s life by administering CPR immediately to revive his heart and breathing.

First aid needed in varied workplaces and occupations. It is never a wasted skill. Many employers may pay for their employees to get certified. Other employers may leave it to the staff to make their own provisions. Either way, it is necessary to get training and acquire skills that will benefit you all your life.
