8 Side Effects of Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair restoration can come in any form, and one that is considered to be the most radical solution is hair transplant surgery. Over the years that it has been practiced, hair transplant is known to generally provide successful results, especially with the improvement of techniques and equipment. But despite its good reviews, it is also important for those considering this treatment option to know its list of possible side effects.
Swelling
Due to the trauma that the surgery creates on the head, swelling is an expected phenomenon. The swelling usually occur on the forehead or in the area around the eyes. Some individuals will even develop a black eye as a result. But this will soon dissipate within a week.
Bleeding
Since hair transplants are invasive in nature, small wounds or incisions would have to be made. In some cases these would end up bleeding, but this can be controlled by applying some pressure on the area. Only in rare occasions does the bleeding fail to stop, and in this case the surgeon may have to do some emergency repair.
Pain
Pain is a side effect that anyone who has undergone the procedure would most likely experience. But usually the pain felt will be minimal and only a small percentage of patients required pain medications for relief. If pain is persistent and increases in intensity during the coming days, this has to be reported to the surgeon immediately because this could be a sign of a progressing infection, especially if associated with redness.
Infection
The use of poor techniques and a break in the sterile technique during the procedure can introduce infection. Sometimes improper wound care can also result to infection. Antibiotics would usually be prescribed by the surgeon to prevent any opportunistic infection from occurring.
Itching
This is often experienced as scabs start to form on the hair transplant wounds. This occurrence is common but in some cases, there can be severe itching due to the hundreds to thousands of scabs on the area. Anti-itch creams may be used but you have to ask your surgeon first prior to surgery to make sure if he clears you off on this. Shampooing and proper cleaning of the area is also known to relieve itching.
Numbness
This side effect is nothing serious and usually lasts for a couple of weeks. The degree of numbness felt will depend on the extent of the procedure.
Hiccups
This a side effect that you would not expect especially with a procedure that is mainly concerning the head. There is no clear explanation as to why this happens, but only 5% of hair transplant patients experience this side effect. Although it may seem rather minor to be alarmed about, but this can be really annoying in the long run and might be very uncomfortable. Doctors can prescribe a medication to stop the hiccups.
Scarring
This side effect can be expected with the strip method or Follicular Unit Transplantation, because a strip of hair would have to be removed at the back of the head in which hair donors are removed from. This can be concealed if you choose to wear your hair a little longer. Or avoid linear scars entirely by opting for Follicular Unit Extraction. Though hair transplant cost would be more considering the time and technique but if you want a relatively scar less procedure, you can choose the latter.
