8 Steps to Remember While Performing Adult CPR

– Step 1: If the victim is unconscious, try and wake him up. If he is not breathing or is struggling to breathe, call 911 and start on the next step immediately.
– Step 2: In case the victim is not breathing, start chest compressions. Place the base of your palm on the mid-section of his chest and the other palm on the first with fingers of both hands together. Perform regular compressions, approximately about hundred compressions every minute. Perform these compressions continuously for about 20 seconds.
– Step 3: If you do not have your CPR certification, continue to administer the chest compressions till medical help arrives or the victim awakens. If you are CPR certified, start rescue breaths or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If there a pocket mask available you should use it. Position the head, press the nose and cover the victim’s mouth with yours. Breathe in deeply so that there is a significant chest rise. Repeat this rise and fall at regular intervals. Do this a couple of times and then move to the next step.
– Step 4: The next step is to continue the chest compressions as you did earlier. This time do thirty more compressions at the same rate.
– Step 5: Repeat the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation as mentioned in step 3 if you are a trained CPR technician.
– Step 6: Don’t stop. It may seem like nothing you’re doing is helping, but don’t lose hope. Continue with the chest compressions and resuscitations. Perform around five cycles of thirty compressions and follow with two resuscitation breaths. Alternatively, if you have access to an AED(Automated External Defibrillator), connect it to the victim after one cycle of chest compression and rescue breaths.
-Step 7: If you have been performing the cycles continuously for two minutes stop the chest compressions and check to see if the victim is breathing. If the answer is negative, start again from step 2 by restarting compressions.
-Step 8: Repeat this entire procedure till help arrives. Remember to check the victim’s breathing every couple of minutes. If at any point during CPR administration the victim wakes up, you can stop CPR.
The above mentioned steps are guidelines to perform CPR in the field. In spite of knowing these steps you must enroll in proper CPR classes.
