A Guide to Manchester’s Green Quarter
The Green Quarter has become a popular destination for young professionals moving into the northern UK city of Manchester and older hands looking to make the most of its ideal location without the hustle and bustle associated with city centre living. It’s easy to see why; living solutions in the Green Quarter range from affordable studio flats to top-of-the-range contemporary 2 bedroom apartments.
The Green Quarter is designed for people who want all the perks of living in the city centre with the lush greenery country living offers. Blocks of contemporary housing surround landscaped green space and a raft of tranquil water features. There are plans for retail developments within The Green Quarter, meaning that eventually the development will become self-contained – a mini village in the same vein as the Northern Quarter, if you will.
For the moment though, The Green Quarter is served by the wealth of local amenities situated nearby. Just around the corner is the MEN Arena, which plays host to a series of world class musical acts and other entertainment such as the Cirque du Soleil and wrestling from the US. The Arndale Centre and the City Centre itself are less than a mile away, meaning that a good shopping spree is never far away – and with rent prices extremely reasonable for city centre living, you’re bound to have a little bit to spare on treating yourself. The Printworks is close by as well, housing as it does plenty of bars and restaurants and an Odeon Cinema, which is home to Manchester’s IMAX cinema. Public transport connections are good too, with the Metrolink and Manchester’s ever-reliable bus service on hand to get you around.
The development hasn’t flown under the radar of property critics either. In 2005, the Manchester Evening News awarded The Green Quarter the Best Regeneration Scheme at its Residential Property Awards, praising the value it has added to Manchester, its extension of the boundaries of Manchester City Centre as well as the ‘…scale of the buildings and the high quality of the outside landscaped space’.
The Green Quarter should be considered by anyone looking to live in Manchester, although young professionals may find it particularly appealing due to the reasonable rates of rent and its proximity to the city centre – it’s ideal if you work in the city centre itself or simply need to get to Piccadilly to commute elsewhere.
Those for looking to buy should also take a good look at the Green Quarter, as the prices quoted are also quite good. The cheapest studio apartment costs just over £80,000 and most of the apartments in the development hover about the £150,000 – £200,000 mark. It’s perfect for anyone wanting to live in the City Centre without some of the baggage that sometimes comes with it, and it’s worth investing now if you get the chance.
The Green Quarter also offers a great opportunity for buying-to-let, as apartments in the development are in demand with renters. As the complex develops further, prices for apartments are bound to increase too so it’s worth taking a look into now if you are considering investing in some city centre property for letting purposes.
