Benefits of Diet and Exercise From a Concord Personal Trainer

A few years ago, a next-door neighbor of mine named Larry suddenly died. Of course, for most this conjures up the image of an elderly gentleman who had simply gotten old and passed from this life. However, the reality is that Larry was 27 years old and seemed to be fairly healthy; if you looked past the fact he weighed well over three hundred pounds and had a smoking habit. The cause of death was sudden cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, a short life of poor health habits claimed Larry’s life. It’s important to avoid the same pitfall in our own lives, according to several Concord personal trainers.

Diet and exercise are an important combination to improving your health and fitness. It’s in this combination as well as in the commitment to good health habits, such as avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol use, that you will find your best hope for improving your level of fitness. Start any fitness plan with the goals you have for yourself and how you will meet those goals, especially with the help of a Concord personal trainer. Speaking to a certified nutritionist about your diet and to a Concord personal trainer at your local gym can give you an idea of what you need to do in order to become healthier. However, be prepared for the reality of true life-changing fitness; it can be very difficult to change unhealthy habits and in many people excess fat does not simply “melt away” as they may have imagined. Determination will be the key to any successful plan.

Let’s start with your diet. The best way to determine where you currently are with your diet is to keep a food diary for a week. Be honest and include the quarter-pound hamburger and fries you sometimes allow yourself at lunch. After one week of recording your dietary habits, return you your dietitian or nutritionist for a consultation. At this point, the professional can point out the foods that are healthy, those that are not, and those that may be ok if eaten in small portions or only occasionally. The problem in our society is that we tend to eat large portions of foods that are already unhealthy even when in small portions. Knowing what you can eat from your current list of foods can help you make the transition into a better dietary lifestyle.

Some foods that should be avoided in any diet include simple sugars, or “empty calories,” such as those found in sugary soft drinks and candies. Although fine as a treat in very small proportions, you should make an attempt to select foods that also contain vitamins and minerals necessary to good health. For example, instead of eating a candy bar while drinking a large soft drink, choose low-fat milk and a banana. While the soft drink and candy bar may seem alluring, they have very little nutritional value (other than to help you gain weight) while the banana contains essential potassium and the milk contains vitamin D and calcium.

Exercise must be a part of any successful plan for improving your physical fitness. Sure, you can lose weight by dieting alone, but the loss of weight can be accelerated with appropriate cardiovascular and weight training. Those who have physical difficulties with most exercises can speak with their healthcare provider or Concord personal trainer about less physically-stressful exercises that may be performed. Walking is among the simplest of all exercises and can be done with minimal impact to the body. However, for those who are already physically inclined, simple jogging and using equipment in a local gym can also be an option for improving their overall physical health. Just be prepared to fully commit to your own weight loss and fitness goals in order to see positive results for yourself.
