Can Catastrophic Injuries in the Summer Be Avoided?

Summer is the most dangerous season annually as people are more susceptible to being involved in accidents. Catastrophic injuries go up in number during the summer, as a variety of factors, including alcohol and drug use, along with a lack of attention, factor into the likelihood that a fun activity turns dastardly. Over the last decade, traumatic care centers in hospitals, have had to ask the government for assistance in expanding their centers during the summers. Today, we will be looking at how catastrophic injuries can be avoided in the summer.

A couple of years ago, a hospital reported, that they averaged nine catastrophic injury cases in a single summer. To put this number into perspective, consider that in the seven years prior, that same hospital had a total of seven catastrophic cases. The cause of these accidents and subsequent horrific injuries, stemmed from a lack of care by different municipalities when it came to swimming in lakes. For example, a few years ago, a man aged 23 was enjoying his summer vacation, by going swimming with a few friends, when tragedy struck. When the man attempted to dive into the water, he was unaware of how shallow the water was. As a result, he cracked his spine and become paralyzed.

For all intents and purposes, the man\’s family would sue the city in which he and his friends went swimming, as there were no signs to indicate the depth of the water. Meaning to say, a catastrophic injury such as the one endured by the young man and his family, could have been avoided. If the city in which his accident took place had taken responsibility and placed signs around the lake the chances are great that this accident would have been avoided. Now, that man has to file for catastrophic impairment injuries, as he is no longer able to work. What\’s worse, is the fact that the man was not even doing anything dangerous, he just wanted to swim and have fun with friends.

As we asked earlier, can catastrophic injuries be avoided in the summer? In our opinion absolutely, they can be avoided at all costs. While it is nice to enjoy your summer vacation, it is also important to understand that you have a life outside of the lake or swimming pool. You can never be too cautious, as just because an activity is enjoyable, does not mean that the risk suddenly disappears. It is often hard when in a group to resist the challenges. Young people should especially remember to consider the possible lifelong consequences of a risky action.

By making yourself and your loved ones aware of the risks associated with having fun in the summer, you can avoid a catastrophic injury. It can be argued as well, that municipalities have as much responsibility to keep you safe as you do. At least they are responsible for ensuring dangerous situations have warnings. For this reason, if you or a loved one has sustained an injury, it is important to contact a personal injury lawyer, to explore your rights for compensation.
