Celebration of Life-victory Day in Kyiv
Not everybody knows what Victory day is in post-soviet countries, meaning where and when and how people of the post most powerful country in the world celebrate it.
For those who are really far from us, let us remind that it was a World War II that is also known as a Great Patriotic War in Ukraine, Russia and more than 10 other countries -participators of the Soviet Union.
The most violent and inhuman in its cruelty war started on September 1st, 1939 with Nazi Germany invasion to Poland, the official start of Great Patriotic War officially started in 2 years, in 1941. It lasted for 4 awful years, killing millions of people and destroying hundreds of ha of Soviet and then German lands.
Almost every family in post-soviet countries has at least 2-3 people, who died during the war, due to the hunger, battles, concentrated camps, slaving jobs and many-many more.
Unfortunately, World War II left an indelible impressions, thoughts and memories that are never to be forgotten.
May 9th is a day of tears and laugh, hugs and kisses, scaring war stories and light hopes for the bright future and sincere joy for a peaceful today.
This day is not a simple tradition or another day off – it is a massive celebration of life, peace and happiness. Each year the number of people who celebrate it increases, unfortunately, the number of those who participated in the war is less and less.
Since you are 5 years old, your parents, grandparents, teachers tell you so much about the most glorifying time of the country, brave heroic actions of grand-grandpas that will become your model roles in life.
Almost all the May, children and their parents perform concerts, visit their elder relatives, cook tasty meals, and go to the war monuments.
Usually, the day starts very early, at about 7-8 a.m. when people hurry to watch the biggest action of the day, which is parade: war machines and tanks go, making a great noise, planes are flying above and thousands of cute and sport looking soldiers, sailors, pilots are passing by, eventually giving smiles to standing on the corners screaming girls. After the parade is over, all the visitors take their large bouquets of flowers and give run to give it to every veteran they see. Saying thank you words in exchange to scary and romantic war stories they go together the monument of Unknown Soldier. All the celebration ends at one of the biggest Kyiv museums – museum of Great Patriotic War-the most interesting and probably most depressive place in Kyiv.
Seeing pictures of kids from concentrated camps or even such horrible evidence of Nazi’s cruelty like glows that were made out of human skin or soup made out of human fat could not leave anyone unimpressed.
Though, the entire day is filled with horrible memories it is also filled with true happiness of wonderful today that we owe to our elders, who fought and believed, that by dying and suffering and savings millions, they will make a bright and beautiful future for all of us, for me and you.
