Choosing the Perfect Bridal Saree

Your mother wants you to wear the family heriloom Saree for your big day. But it’s your day, choose what you’d like to wear! Indian Wedding shopping can be extremely stressful – but we have some tips on selecting the perfect Bridal Saree.

First, decide the colour that best compliments you. The colour needs to complement you, and flatter your skin tone. Traditional colours like Red, Pink, Yellow are the choice for most Brides, but be bold and go for Orange, Purple, Gold or even White.

Second, styling is important. Do you want something very traditional or extremely modern that is going to surprise even your best friend? Blouses are giving way to Sheeting Corsets or even to Shirts styled as Blouses.

Third, Detailing in the form of Embroidery and Embellishments are probably the holy grail of your Bridal Saree. Choose with perspective on the future – are you going to be wearing the style again? Keep it simple and elegant in that case. Opt for beautiful and intricate embroidery rather than over the top embroidery. Techniques such as Kantha, Chikan and Aari are beautiful and are an excellent choice for their simplicity yet elegant finish.

Fourth, Indian Designer or Indian Tailor? A lot of Brides have recently started opting for Designer copies. Not a suggested option – go for the real thing. It’s a piece to treasure for life, invest the right amount for the big day. Designers spend a time to understand your personality and styling and provide an individually styled piece. Detailing, styling and finish of a tailor is not going to match the quality of a designer – ever.

Lastly, make sure that you give enough time for fittings and trials. Make sure that the blouse fits perfectly and that you are comfortable. Your designer needs to ensure that the fitting is perfect – you need to be focussing on your wedding, not worrying about being un-comfortable.

Embroidered Sarees are making a come-back for Traditional styles, while more modern styled Sarees are the choice for more Contemporary styling. In either case, make sure you select with care and invest enough time with your Designer to create a piece that reflects your personality and style.

A Bridal ensemble is supposed to reflect your personality and be something that you invest in, with a clear intention of passing this along to the next generation. Make sure that the garment is well protected and stored appropriately. The gold or Jari detailing in the embroidery might get oxidised if the quality is not of the best standards.

Perhaps another important aspect is to make sure that this shopping experience is not over-whelming. Choose to shop online for a comfortable, private and customised experience. A better way to spend your time is with family or sorting out the Fiancee’s Sherwani – that he has clearly not yet sorted out!.

Remember the key aspects that you should consider – Colour, Styling, Designer and Made to Measure. Make it fun and be sure to enjoy shopping for your perfect Saree – this is a once in a life-time experience.
