Daily Life With a Defiant Child
When there is a child living in your home who has ODD, it affects almost every aspect of your day today life. There are many issues that occur when you have a defiant child that will cause stress, anger, resentment, sadness, and much worry for the entire household. Even though you dearly love your child, you may sometimes feel like you don\’t like him or her very much. Oppositional Defiant Disorder in children is an issue that requires much patience from the people who care for them or are around them on a regular basis. This includes parents, other family members, teachers, doctors, and therapists as well as anyone else who has regular contact with the child. These children have major discipline and anger problems that are not easy to deal with. It gets to the point sometimes where you feel like you have to monitor yourself as much as your child. This is because you are afraid of saying or doing something that will anger or upset the child and you just can’t take any more fighting and arguing about every little thing. These children also tend to lie and steal as well as show very aggressive behavior. They often let their school work go completely or just do not try to make an effort at doing a good job on it. Also, children who have ODD usually do not care about their personal hygiene. They do not care if they are clean or what their clothes look like. Most of the time, they are not the least bit concerned about their appearance or how other people might perceive them. They just have no worries at all about their image.
These problems are very alarming for the parents and caregivers of these children, because it causes them to worry so much about what the child\’s life is going to be like in the future. With all of the anger and aggression problems, lying and stealing, they worry about the child ending up in jail or some other even worse situation. If there are other children in the household, they also may worry about the child who has ODD hurting the others simply because they are so easy and quick to anger. Another thing that is hard about dealing with ODD is trying to find methods of ODD treatment that work. Seeing a therapist or counselor is definitely an option. If the child will open up and talk to the counselor, it could be of great help in relieving some of their stress. Often times though, these children will not open up and talk to anyone about their problems and worries. The best thing for the parents or caregivers to do for the child with ODD is to constantly seek out and experiment with different methods to find what helps the particular child. There are some programs available for purchase that claim to help solve the problems associated with ODD. It may be worthwhile to check into this option and give it a try. Also, help the child find ways to release anger and frustration in ways that are acceptable. Things like going for a run, beating on a pillow, even playing video games or listening to music might help. Every child is different. You just have to keep experimenting until you figure out what works.
