Finding the Right Strategy For Your Child With ODD
The one thing that you as a parent must make note of is that it is no longer difficult to find help for your child and learn how to deal with his or her behavioral problems. There are a lot of sites on the Internet which give advice and help for parents with children diagnosed with ODD. Nowadays anyone can find a strategy which will work for their child.
Things to remember:
Never shout or scream back at your child
Learn how to effectively communicate with him or her
Find a way to stop his or her frustrations
Make your child active socially
When you child is behaving badly and a lot of shouting and screaming is going on take the time to draw a deep breath. You will add fuel to the situation if you respond in kind. Instead attempt to talk to your child in a gentle and quiet manner. It has been proven that children with ODD will respond better this way and soon you will see that your child has become quiet as well. By your loud behavior you would be making your child to become more defiant this way by calmly facing the situation you get your child to calm down too. Afterwards once the situation is under control this is the time to start communication. Find out what started it all and what made your child made at you or his or her sibling. Let them know that you understand and that you will do everything to alleviate the situation should it occur again as long as your child is willing to listen and cooperate. This way your child will feel that you are looking toward him or her to help you and this makes them feel wanted and important. Find out what is frustrating or has frustrated your child. Take this time to teach your child about accepting others and things as they are and getting some benefit from them instead of trying to change a situation with defiant behavior. If your child begins to see that they don’t need to be defiant to get something they want or to change a situation this will work in your favor. Soon you may see that the ODD doesn’t quite influence your child as it once did. Start putting your child more into social settings. Take them places with you even if it is only shopping. This will get them out of the house and they will see a whole different world. It can be fun and exciting for them. Perhaps have him or her interact with other children in a play group just as long as you’re able to control the situation. If there are other children at home get your ODD child to start interacting with them more if he or she has been keeping to themselves. This will benefit all of you for the better and soon you may see the defiance slipping away.
