Fixing Bad Hair Transplant Results: Your Hair Transplant Repair Options
When it comes to hair restoration procedures, hair transplant has been a proven method over the years. It has undergone numerous improvements which resulted to an increased success rate that it holds today. Unfortunately it is not a clean trail for hair transplant to reach where it has today. Over the past years, and in some very rare cases today, many have fallen to poor quality results. But with the advancement in practice, hair transplant repair can be made possible.
Bad hair transplants can either be a plugged look quite similar to a doll’s hair, a bad hairline, or a wrong direction of the hair grafts. So instead of solving the problem, you end up having this embarrassing reminder of not lonely your hair loss but your botched hair transplant as well.
A bad hair transplant can be repaired using a variety of techniques. These techniques include the graft excision, camouflage, a combination of the first two, laser hair removal, scalp micro-pigmentation and scar repair.
In the past the method used for hair transplant is removing large hair grafts from the donor area at the back of the head. This is also called a punch technique, because an instrument called a trephine, is used to remove a part of your scalp in a punch-like manner sort of like a cookie cutter. The extracted portion is then immediately transplanted into the balding area and sometimes with the large amount of grafts it creates that corn row appearance or what is called a hair plug.
Sometimes the best way to resolve a bad hair transplant is to remove the implanted hair grafts using an excision technique. The holes that remain after will then be sutured. The removed hair plugs will then be separated into singular follicular units using a high-powered microscope. This method also prevents any hair wastage. In most cases this procedure will not be finished within one sitting, it may take a couple of sessions to correct the entire problem area.
Another way to repair a bad hair transplant is through the camouflage technique. This is most often used repair method by surgeons, and it is done by transplanting new hair around the bad hair grafts to create a natural-looking appearance. The donor hairs are obtained either by FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) or FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and they are also used to add more coverage and to improve the hairline. Sometimes a second procedure would be needed, but it should be done 8-12 months after.
In some cases not all hair grafts needs to be removed, which is why a combination of camouflage and graft excision technique is used by the hair surgeon. If the previously transplanted hairs are pointing at the right direction and are distributed properly, it may just need a light touch up with a few added hair grafts. This technique also takes a number of sessions and it would need a very skilled surgeon with good aesthetic judgment to create an exceptional hair transplant repair from an average one.
For those patients who have significantly low hairlines due to hair placed in the wrong location and direction, laser hair removal would be an appropriate method for repair. It does not require any invasive procedure but rather it only uses “selective photothermolysis.” Using high intensity light at a specific wavelength it targets the pigment of the hair follicles. The drawback to this procedure is that it is not very effective in individuals with light hair. It can even cause a discoloration on the scalp for those who have darker skin because it is the pigment in their skin which absorbs the light energy more.
Scalp micro-pigmentation is also another technique where cosmetic tattoos are made to permanently mimic hair. The resulting look will be similar to a scalp with shortly shaved hairs. This is appropriate for alopecia areata, male/female pattern baldness or scarring alopecia.
Another hair transplant repair technique is fixing the scar area. Of course this vertical line creates a poor aesthetic effect, and there is a good way of concealing this. It is done by the extracting hairs surrounding the scar and then implanting them directly on it.
