Garage Tells: Don’t Kick Out the Car!
Garages were invented right around the turn of the century when horse-drawn carriages began to slowly be replaced by the new-fangled automobile. The carriage houses that had long housed horse and buggy would have worked for the automobile, too, if horses didn’t have a tendency to make everything around them smell like manure. People in the early 1900s wanted to keep their new automobiles shiny and free from the smell of the old way of life, while also protecting it from the elements. And so the garage was born. Read more about it.
For over a hundred years, garages have stored our vehicles and…wait…why do you have a garage and keep your car out on the driveway in the sun? Driving down this street, why do I see so many garages and so many cars parked along the road? Has the purpose of garages changed and no one told me?
The truth is, garages have become a really convenient storage facility, haven’t they? A catch-all of the extra overflow of our busy lives. Boxes, bicycles, workbenches, old toys and unused furniture leak out into the garage slowly pushing the vehicle out, out, out to the driveway. And be honest, how often do you need all of that stuff out in the garage? Do you use it every day? Weekly? Monthly? Ever?
Consider self-storage. The monthly payment on units the size of your garage can cost less than a trip to the grocery store. You can set aside all those leaning towers of boxes, the unused furniture and free up your garage for the purpose it was meant for. Parking your car in your garage instead of on the street means you don’t have to get wet when it’s raining. In the middle of the summer, your car interior can jump up to over 150 degrees in less than an hour. The ability to keep your car in your garage will save you that pain, for your skin, and for your car’s interior. Using the garage for the car also means no more scraping snow and ice from the windshield in the winter. Your mornings will be less of a pain, and your car will stay in better condition.
Even if you are able to fit your car in your garage, the clutter that may surround your car can be a pain. If that passenger door is hard to open because of the boxes…or maybe you have to pull the car out onto the driveway before you can load the kids in. Think about storing all your extra things your garage has been holding for years.
And here’s something self-storage can offer that garages often don’t: dust and climate controlled units. Maybe you are storing your great-grandmothers old family pictures out in the garage because you simply don’t have room in your house. The heat and dirt (not to mention rodents) that can infiltrate your garage are no longer worries in self-storage. Your belongings will be kept safe. And so will your car.
