Ghillie Suit Kits Take Patience

Any student of stealth and the stalk must try his hand at building a ghillie suit sooner or later since the ghillie suit is the ultimate in camouflage for mankind. Sooner is better than later. A thorough understanding of camouflage is not complete without familiarity with the concept of the ghillie suit, and one can much better understand by building one. While it is not necessary to buy a kit to do this, it is far less frustrating. A kit will come with all needed supplies and instructions. After building one from a kit, I recommend building one from whatever materials you have at hand. The better you understand what goes into building the tools for camouflage, the better you will understand the art, craft, and skill that it takes to be adept at concealment.

All of the commercially available ghillie suit kits consist of a net, a quantity of thread in jute or synthetics, and instructions. The size of the net and the quantity of thread will vary according to whether you are building a poncho for the top half of your body or a full body length poncho. If the poncho style suit is not to your liking, there is available a set of BDUs in your choice of camo pattern with the netting already sewn on. You buy these in your size and tie on the thread in your choice of colors and your choice of synthetic or jute thread. If your intent is to build the most common color, woodland, you can get the thread pre-blended and avoid the guess work of getting the right amount of each color in the right spaces. Four bundles will build the half poncho. Seven bundles will build a full body suit in either the poncho or the BDU style. For learning purposes, I recommend simply buying a 4\’X5\’ net and 4 bundles of the blended thread.

Once you have learned the basics of building a ghillie suit, You can make a much better informed decision when you buy the suit you are going to use, or you can build the suit you need to a much higher standard. Don\’t restrict yourself in the building. The limits of your imagination are the only limits to what you are able to do. If you are building the ghillie suit for hunting, wildlife observation, or anything to do with animals, be careful that the materials you use do not contain any UV brighteners because animals will quickly key on anything that can be seen with ultra-violet. If you are using materials you are not sure of, there are chemical treatments you can apply to kill the UV. The same can be said for any odors that may linger from prior use.

If you take the time to learn, you can build a better suit than you can buy. Just remember, it does take a lot of time and even more patience to do it right. It\’s a good project for someone who lives alone and is snowbound through the winter. For the rest of us, avoid the frustration and buy the best suit you can afford.
