Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR Review

You want to record your incredible video game footage so that you can upload your videos to Youtube for the world to see, BUT you need to know how to do this right? Look no further than the Hauppauge (pronounced HA-POG) 1212 HD-PVR! This incredible device will record your video game footage in high quality 1080i and you can even edit your movies in a movie editor like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premier.

There may be other devices out there that can record video game footage, but if you want to record in high definition – you NEED to get either the 1212 HD-PVR or the 1445 HD-PVR!!

I personally own the Hauppauge 1212 and have been using it for over a year now and it has worked flawlessly. My sole usage of this device has been to record footage of my Gran Turismo 5 sessions with my drift team. Everyone who sees my videos always compliments me on the superb quality of the videos.

The device is easy to connect when you have all of the cables. You will need to have the component cable for your specific game console. This device is a pass-through device so you connect your gaming console cable to the back of the PVR and then use the provided component cable to connect the HD-PVR to your TV. Then plug the USB cable from the PVR to your computer.

The Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR comes with software called Arcsoft Total Media Extreme plus Arcsoft Media Convert. Arcsoft Media Convert allows you to change the format of your recordings so you can view them on an iPad or other portable media player. I personally use Arcsoft Total Media software to record my gaming sessions and then edit my videos with Sony Vegas 11 HD Platinum Movie Studio.

Late last year (September 2011), Hauppauge released what they call the \”HD-PVR Gaming Edition\” to the market. Just so you know that there is NO difference between the two devices physically other than the light they emit during recording.

The differences between the 1212 HD-PVR and the 1445 HD-PVR Gaming Edition are:

-Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR includes a IR blaster cable to control your cable or satellite set top box channel changing.

-Hauppauge 1445 Gaming Edition has a Component Video cable for easy connection to an Xbox 360 or PS3 (no Wii cable – see above for component cable).

-Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR contains Arcsoft Total Media Extreme plus Arcsoft Media Convert.

-Hauppauge 1445 HD-PVR Gaming Edition contains Arcsoft ShowBiz with capture and upload to YouTube. A media converter is NOT included in the Gaming Edition model.

Lastly, the 1212 HD-PVR uses a blue record ring to indicate that recording is taking place while the 1445 HD-PVR Gaming Edition uses a green record ring.

If you are NOT using component cables for your consoles, it may be worth buying the Hauppauge 1445 as it comes with a 2-1 component cable for PS3 and Xbox 360 (savings of at least $10 if you bought the Hauppauge 1212).

Whichever model you decide to use, Hauppauge PVR will give you the quality and high definition to represent your gaming abilities!
