History of Remote Control Helicopters

The first successful flight of a remote control helicopter or radio controlled helicopter as they are also known took place in West Germany in 1968 and was built by Dr. Dieter Schlute. This model was the first proper fully functional remote controlled helicopter and was a pioneer within its field. This provided the groundwork for development over the coming years.

In 1941 saw the breakthrough of rotary propellers by Igor Sikorsky. But it was ten years after the first successful flight in 1968 that saw the semi-wide Autogiro Wallace become a leader in the development of mini helicopters in 1978. This is the one model that became the focus of development for many other developers and variations eventually hit the model shops and kit shops all around the world.

As the remote control helicopter developed and evolved they started to include blades that rotate about their longitudinal axis to vary or reverse the lift. This was much trickier to fly but aerodynamically they were more manageable.

The next major obstacle was the amount of power needed to lift the craft off of the ground. Today the power issue is not a problem. Modern rc helicopters include overcome where by the include Nitro (nitromethane-methanol combustion), gas turbines, electric batteries and gasoline. Even the electric batteries that are around these days give out more power than previous batteries. They also last for much longer which means you can have much more fun with them before they need more gas or to be charged again.

More recently the main development on RC helicopters is gyroscopic technology. This has meant that they are far easier to control and anyone can fly them. You can easily turn and manoeuvre the crafts very accurately which means there is less chance of crashing and repairs needed. But these days the re-building of a crashed craft is half the fun. You can create bespoke crafts and find spares in hobby shops or on online store.

RC Helicopters are now stocked by major high street and come in all shapes and sizes. You can buy one that fits in the palm of your hand or crafts that are the size of an average dog! Anyone can buy them, gone are the days when it was just serious hobbyists would buy them. There are even crafts with cameras under the frames which can record as its flying. This makes is useful for filing the condition of your roof or finding something in the attic before you physically go up there.

With the power of the internet you can now join clubs online and arrange to meet other enthusiast for flying fun. There are many clubs all around the world where enthusiasts meet and enjoy their hobby together. Finding them is easy with good old Google. Just type in your location and the words “rc helicopter club” and you find all the local clubs. There are also forums and chat rooms where like minded people can chat to one another and write reviews on particular models. Also the internet means you can look at all the online stores and compare models to ensure you get the best deal.
