How to Make the Most of a Small Bedroom
While the bedroom is possibly the only room in which a person can truly express themselves through decoration and design, the most important consideration when it comes to designing a bedroom is comfort.
Unfortunately, no home has identically sized bedrooms so someone inevitably ends up with a small room that seems cramped and uncomfortable – exactly what you don’t want from a bedroom. However, with careful planning and designing, even the smallest of bedrooms can be transformed into a stylish haven of relaxation that could make even the inhabitants of a master bedroom envious.
When designing a small bedroom, optimising your space is vital. You need to consider the space requirements of every single item in the room, and how it will affect the overall environment. As such, you need to stick to the basic furniture requirements of a bedroom – bed, wardrobe and a bedside table – and try to eliminate any clutter.
There are plenty of ways to do this. Consider downsizing your bed to start with, as a large bed will instantly make a small room feel even smaller. Try and buy a bed with built-in storage underneath too. For wardrobes, consider sliding doors or even walk-in wardrobes. Normal wardrobes can work too, so long as they don’t protrude from the wall too much and aren’t oversized and thus overpower the room!
If you can, try and make your room as multifunctional as possible. Sofa beds are commonly associated with slackers, but there are a range of comfortable and stylish daybeds available that are just as comfy as a regular bed and serve as seating too. Try and integrate storage wherever possible; the aforementioned bed with drawers is fantastic for small rooms, but consider hooks on the door or fold-up storage too.
Luxuries needn’t be shunned completely, however, so long as you can fit them in without taking up too much space. You’ll never fit gym equipment in a small room, but a wall-mounted flat screen TV takes up very little space while a small bedside table with a lamp for reading adds a rustic, homely feel to any room.
In terms of decoration, light colours can make any room seem larger than it is. Opt for plenty of white and pastel colours and choose a light plain carpet. Wallpapering only one section of the room can also deceive the eye into believing a room is bigger than it is.
You may not think of curtains as taking up much space, but elaborate curtains can make a room feel smaller. Opt for simple roller or venetian blinds instead. Finally, create a focal point to draw attention away from the size of the room and onto how great it looks. Posters and paintings make for good focal points, but make sure you only use one as too many can have the opposite effect of making the room feel smaller.
Making the most of a small bedroom can be an arduous task, especially if you don’t plan ahead and have to physically move furniture around. It’s worth consulting with a professional and drafting up a design on interior design software – these 3D planners give you the chance to design your room virtually and see it as it would look in the real world! This really helps when it comes to making design decisions and should see you on your way to transforming your small bedroom into a relaxation utopia!
