How Women Can Thicken Thinning Hair

Thinning hair can be thickened if the right hair care routine is followed. However growing thicker hair is dependent on tackling both the internal and external factors that are causing your hair loss. Nutrition and avoiding stress are the most important internal factors while the type of hair products and hair care routines are the most important external factors.

Thinning hair can be caused by hormones, such as during the menopause, stress, a lack of nutrients required for healthy hair growth, or the way hair is cared for.

Hair that becomes thin due to the menopause can be thickened using hair care products that are designed specifically to target DHT on the scalp. DHT is a hormone that causes the hair follicle to shrink making it unsuitable to sustain healthy hair growth. The shrunken follicle produces thin lifeless hair over a short period of time and eventually becomes unable to produce any hair, leaving the hair follicle in its dormant state permanently.

The most effective internal treatment is Saw Palmetto. Saw Palmetto is a natural anti-androgen that helps inhibit DHT production. The most effective external treatments are minoxidil and caffeine based shampoos and hair tonics.

Nutrients needed for hair growth

A diet lacking in the nutrients hair requires to grow will only make thinning hair worse. In fact the thinning hair has little or no chance of becoming thick if your body isn’t provided with the nutrients it needs to produce hair.

The vitamins and minerals required for healthy hair growth are Vitamin A, B vitamins, Iron, Zinc, Omega-3 fatty acids, and Selenium. A healthy diet rich is lean protein sources such as fish, seafood, turkey, spinach, legumes, kale, carrots, low fat dairy products and nuts should provide the body with an adequate supply of these vitamins and minerals. These minerals and vitamins are destroyed during commercial food processing, so if your diet is mainly made up of packaged, tinned, frozen or microwave meals it’s time to reconsider what you eat and what nutrients your body actually has access to.

An easy way to ensure the body is receiving the nutrients it needs in adequate doses is to take a supplement designed specifically for hair growth.

The way hair is cared for

A common type of hair loss called traction alopecia is caused by regularly pulling hair into tight hairstyles. This repeated trauma causes scalp inflammation and damaged hair follicles. Hair follicles may also become damaged due to the weight of ornaments used and hair extensions. Hair extensions should not be worn on a regular basis and tight hairstyles such as chignons, and ponytails should also be avoided. Especially if the hair is already weak and thin.

Use products that are designed to stimulate hair growth. These can be in the form of shampoos, tonics and lotions. Caffeine based shampoos and tonics boost scalp circulation and promote hair growth. Women should not shy away from caffeine based products on the basis that they are made for men suffering from male pattern baldness. In fact Caffeine based shampoos are also made for women with thinning hair and should be incorporated into your hair care regimen.

Other products that will boost hair growth are minoxidil or what might be considered it’s herbal alternative, Bhringaraj – called False Daisy or Eclipta alba. Regular scalp massages will also boost scalp circulation and should be performed several times a week.

The stress factor

Stress can inhibit hair growth and is associated with Alopecia areata, Telogen effluvium, and Trichotillomania hair loss. Try to manage your stress on your own by taking time out of your hectic schedule to do something you really enjoy. This could be working out, reading a book, taking a walk, meeting friends for lunch, going to the movies or anything at all that allows you to relax. Try to get away from the cause of your stress for a while. Take time off work at regular intervals and if that is not an option, then make the best use of your weekend. Get a massage, drive to the beach, visit family, or learn to meditate. Whatever you choose to do, it is important to find time for yourself and do an activity that makes you happy. If you can’t get your stress under control yourself, then see your doctor.
